Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 8 p.m.
$16
This Northern Virginia-based, indie-folk rocker makes his return to The Barns after his 2008 Wammie win for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Singer/songwriter Luke Brindley is a strong acoustic guitarist that gained regional fame touring with his multi-instrumentalist brother as the Brindley Brothers. His newest self-titled record calls to mind Motown and classic 1970's singer/songwriters like Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. Brindley is a frequent performer and co-owner of Jammin' Java, a small musical venue located in Vienna, Virginia, that was recently voted one of the Top 100 Clubs in the World by Pollstar magazine. Brindley has released four critically acclaimed albums in the last five years, garnering praise from numerous national publications. Equally at home on the stage, The Washington Times says of his live performance "no song goes untouched by the energy and pure infectious joy of Luke's performance...a mastery of pop song craft and stagecraft."
The Alternate Routes are a rock band out of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The band recorded their debut album titled Good and Reckless and True in Nashville in 2005. The album emphasizes straightforward guitar rock, with occasional songs on the gentler, singer/songwriter style. In 2006 the band won an Independent Music Award for the song "Ordinary."
Lucy Kaplansky

$20
This Manhattan folk singer/songwriter is making her return to The Barns for another night of provocative love songs. Building a second career in the music industry after acquiring her PhD in psychology, Lucy Kaplansky spent time traversing the coffeehouse circuit, church halls, and festivals, as well as performing live with Richard Shindell and John Gorka. Kaplansky's first solo album, The Tide (1994), featured three of Kaplansky's own compositions and a collection of well-worn covers, including songs by Richard Thompson, Sting, and Robin Batteau. She has gone on to release several more albums including Flesh and Bone, Ten Year Night, Every Single Day, and Red Thread. Supporting the release of her newest CD, Over the Hills, Kaplansky has been touring extensively across North America, reminding audiences why she has been hailed as "a truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songs" (The New Yorker).
Buskin & Batteau
Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.
$22
In a much-anticipated reunion, Buskin & Batteau arrive at The Barns for the first time in 20 years in support of their new album, Red Shoes and Golden Hearts. This folk duo has been called "irresistible...an amalgam of melodic sensual pop, folkie grit, and killer wit" (The Washington Post). David Buskin and Robin Batteau got their start when folk legend Tom Rush asked both to play in his backup band. They have gone on to evoke a wide range of emotions in their audiences, with light-hearted amusement at "ESPN," the pun-filled "Death in Venice," or a gentle sense of loss expressed by their beautiful ballad for the late Kate Wolf, "Never Cry Wolf." As professional jingle writers in their spare time, Buskin & Batteau's voices and tunes have been heard in almost every American household. They've had us listening "to the heartbeat of America", living "in a Burger King Town" and climbing "all aboard Amtrak". Buskin & Batteau combine talent, humor, and showmanship with the element of surprise to produce a crowd-pleasing performance.
