Four County Players is proud to present THE TEMPEST, written by William Shakespeare, adapted and directed by Sara Holdren.
THE TEMPEST is Shakespeare's final great masterpiece. It is a work of magic, mayhem, and mystery - a play about plays, about the creative impulse, about humanity and forgiveness, and about a little island lost in a soundless sea. It is on this remote island where Prospero, a powerful sorcerer and the rightful Duke of Milan, plots revenge on the enemies who banished him - his usurping brother Antonio and the King of Naples, Alonso. For twelve years he has lived on the island with only his thoughts of vengeance to sustain him, alone save for his daughter, Miranda-who has never known life outside the island's wild confines-and the strange company of the spirit Ariel and the island-dweller Caliban. Finally, knowing that his enemies are on board ship in the nearby sea, he conjures up a storm-the eponymous tempest-to wreck them on the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of truths long buried. The play that began with the violence of a savage storm ends with love, redemption, freedom, and the bittersweet acceptance of mortality.
Directing this production is local favorite Sara Holdren, who also adapted and directed the recent production of HENRY IV, PARTS 1 & 2 at Live Arts. She is also known for her work onstage in productions such as Four County Players' TWELFTH NIGHT and AS YOU LIKE IT, Thieving Magpie's production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, and Live Arts' GYPSY. Joining her is a stellar cast of both familiar faces and bright newcomers.
Rounding out the production staff are Gary White as producer; Sara Holdren and Daniel Hager as set designers; Tracie Skipper and Scott Keith as lighting designers; John Holdren as sound designer; Tricia Emlet and Sara Holdren as costume designers; and Scott Keith as technical director.
