With four performances still remaining, the Richmond four-week premiere engagement of Disney's THE LION KING has already broken the Landmark Theater box office record for a Broadway engagement. By the time the wildly successful run concludes on Sunday, March 11, it will have entertained more than 93,000 people and grossed over $5.5 million. The group sales record was also topped with over 250 different organizations and parties of 20 or more in attendance throughout the 32 performances at the Landmark.
It is estimated that by the conclusion of the Richmond engagement THE LION KING will generate a $19.5 million economic benefit to the city from travel, hotels, restaurants, parking and other businesses patronized by both theatergoers and production staff. This figure is based upon a report from the Touring Broadway League, the official trade organization for Broadway and their North American Tours. The report states that on average, Broadway tours contribute to the local metropolitan area's economy an economic impact 3.5 times the gross ticket sales.
"THE LION KING brought us incredibly talented creative artists and actors, and a team that worked hard to maintain the highest theatrical standards," says Steve Traxler, President, Chicago-based JAM Theatricals, the presenting company for Broadway In Richmond, "and the patrons and our loyal Broadway In Richmond subscribers showed their thanks by supporting this blockbuster engagement and making it a success.""We are so proud to share the experience of this groundbreaking production with audiences in Richmond, and to entertain so many first-time and regular theatergoers," said Jack Eldon, Vice President, Domestic, Disney Theatrical Productions. "We are overwhelmed by the enduring response to the show and thank all of Central Virginia for an incredible engagement."
