Sandra Wright, Vermont's premiere blues singer, comes to Middlebury's Town Hall Theater on Friday, September 11 at 8 pm.
Born and raised in Memphis, Wright grew up on the music and barbecue of Beale Street. Blues royalty ran in the family: her first cousin was blues legend Memphis Slim. After recording for the legendary Stax label in the 1970's, Wright formed the Sandra Wright Band and has been touring the country ever since.
While her interest in rhythm and blues remains strong, Wright has branched out to sing jazz classics and standards from the American songbook. Her interpretations are intensely felt, as she coaxes surprising new meanings out of familiar tunes. Wright's voice is a force of nature, recalling Billie Holiday and Nell Carter in its versatility and raw power.
Backing Wright will be local veteran Chuck Miller and his band. The two have played together for many years, including a popular standing gig at the Lake House in Bomoseen, Vermont.
Tickets, $15, are available through the THT Box Office by calling 802-382-9222, online at www.townhalltheater.org, in person on Merchants Row, Middlebury (Mon-Sat, noon-5 pm), or at the door.
