Tamara Wellons brings her unique jazz musical concert SONGS FOR JANIE back to Firehouse for four performances in March and April 2019.
In SONGS FOR JANIE Tamara Wellons gives voice to the coming-of-age story of Janie Crawford, the central character in Zora Neale Hurston's seminal novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God" -- about womanhood, independence, and self worth.
SONGS FOR JANIE began as a concept album that Tamara released in 2012. The stage production premiered in 2013 at the DC Black Theater Festival, and Firehouse produced it in 2016.
Tamara Wellons is a Washington DC-based singer, songwriter, and producer. Born and raised in Ivor, Virginia, she preserves the legacy of her grandmother and aunts who were a part of the legendary gospel group The Pritchett Sisters of Newport News, Virginia. Tamara's diverse career as a performer include collaborations with Soul Candi Records (South Africa), DJ Spen (Quantize Records), Grammy winner Roger Sanchez (Stealth Records), DJ Spinna (BBE), Lars Behrenroth (Deeper Shades Recordings), Deetron (Switzerland), and Souldynamic - UK (Tribe Records). Tamara's first house music singles "Like Rain" and "Oh Well" are mainstays in clubs throughout the world, and her track "In My Lifetime" with producer Ezel, is a South African classic.
