The Richmond Symphony will begin the 2016-17 Season with a sold-out concert featuring legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman on Sun., Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Altria Masterworks concert is presented in partnership with the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center (Weinstein JCC). The evening will be led by Music Director Steven Smith and held at the Carpenter Theatre, Dominion Arts Center. The concert-and a host of other upcoming community events-also will celebrate the Weinstein JCC's 70th Anniversary.
Considered the reigning virtuoso of the violin, Itzhak Perlman has been honored with 16 GRAMMY® Awards, four Emmy Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. "It is a huge thrill to be performing with one of the icons of all of music. I wore out several of his albums as a young violinist! I'm sure our audience will be delighted to welcome him to Richmond," said Music Director Steven Smith.
"The Weinstein JCC is honored to kick-off our 70th Anniversary Celebration year and our 7th Patrons of the Arts Season with this once-in-a-lifetime event! Working with the Richmond Symphony to bring Itzhak Perlman to Richmond has been another amazing partnership," said Erin Mahone, Weinstein JCC director of cultural arts and Jewish education.
The concert will begin with Strauss's Don Juan, followed by Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. The second half of the performance will feature violinist Itzhak Perlman performing Mendelssohn's Concerto in E minor, followed by Enesco's Rumanian Rhapsody in A Major.
The series sponsor is Altria. This concert is sponsored by Weinstein Properties.
