Richmond Triangle Players continues its season with the central Virginia premiere of David Javerbaum's irreverently reverent comedy An Act of God, opening Friday March 1 at 8 pm, following two low-priced previews on Wednesday and Thursday, February 27 & 28 at 8 pm. The production, RTP's entry in the city-wide Acts of Faith Festival, will run through Saturday, March 23.
It's a crazy time in the world and God has something to say - time to clear up some misconceptions and errors in translation that have plagued mankind for all time. So for four short weeks at RTP, God and a multitude of heavenly hosts are here to tell it like it is, to answer the tough questions that have plagued mankind since Genesis, and end the debates once and for all!
An Act of God had its own genesis in playwright Javerbaum's best-selling book The Last Testament: A Memoir of God, and its accompanying Twitter feed, which had over 2 million followers at its peak. David Javerbaum is the former Executive Producer and Head Writer of Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, which earned him 11 Emmys, two additional Emmy nominations, two Peabody Awards, and Television Critics Awards for both Best Comedy and Best News Show.
Since its 2015 Broadway premiere at Studio 54 starring Jim Parsons (TV's Big Bang Theory) and later Sean Hayes (Will & Grace), the title role in An Act of God has been played by many actors and actresses, including Academy Award-nominee Kathleen Turner. The Richmond Triangle Players production marks the first with an all-female cast.
Maggie Bavolack plays the title role in RTP's production, having last appeared on RTP's stage in 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche. Other recent credits include Crimes of the Heart (Virginia Repertory Theatre), Lysistrata (Quill Theatre), and ALICE: A New Musical at TheatreLAB/Firehouse Theatre. She won the RTCC Award for Best Actress in a Play for TheatreLAB's production of Riding the Bull. Kylie Clark returns to RTP as archangel Michael; she previously appeared here as The Angel and others in Angels in America: Millennium Approaches. Anne Michelle Forbes is making her RTP debut as archangel Gabriel, having most recently appeared in 5th Wall Theatre's production of Lizzie, and 5th Wall/TheatreLAB's production of Hand to God.
The production is directed by Jan Guarino (also making her RTP debut), with Scenic Design by Chris Raintree, Costume Design by Sheila Russ, Lighting Design by Michael Jarett, and Sound Design by Lucian Restivo. Ellie McDade-Nelson is the Production Stage Manager.
All performances will take place at Richmond Triangle Players' home at the Robert B. Moss Theatre at 1300 Altamont Avenue, just northwest of the intersection of the Boulevard and West Broad Street. Reserved seat tickets ($30 for Thursday evenings and Sunday matinees; $35 for Friday and Saturday evenings; $18 for the two previews) can be purchased online at RTP's web site at www.rtriangle.org, on RTP's facebook page, or by leaving a message on the RTP Ticket hotline at 804-346-8113. Discounts are available for groups, and student tickets are always just $10.
RTP's Robert B. Moss Theatre is a 4000-square foot performing arts facility accommodating flexible seating arrangements for up to 90 patrons. The building features fully ADA-compliant access and comfortable restrooms, as well as a generous bar, and catering capability, and is also available for cabaret performances and private events.
