Onstage Now is Virginia Stage Company's The Bluest Eye through March 24. Co-produced by Norfolk State University Theatre Company and directed by Khanisha Foster, this production is based on the novel by Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Toni Morrison.

Adapted from Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison's first novel, The Bluest Eye follows Pecola, a young girl in Ohio in the 1940s, who is pregnant at her father's hands. The play, both poetic and daringly funny - even as it breaks your heart - takes us through not only the whys of Pecola's story but also the hows. Character driven, with actors playing multiple roles, Pecola is taken in by a loving family. The two brilliant and kind sisters at the heart of it, Frieda and Claudia, look out for her and walk us through the exquisite storytelling. A story that looks at how the world might break us or give us the light to grow.

Community Engagement Events for The Bluest Eye are supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. Virginia Stage Company is committed to continuing the dialogue that springs from the topics highlighted in The Bluest Eye both at the Wells Theatre and in the greater Hampton Roads community. These in-school and in-community conversations include panel discussions and talk-backs with the actors and director, Khanisha Foster, as well as the activists and scholars that lead Hampton Roads.
