No Rules Theatre Co. (NRTC), one of the world's only dual-headquartered theatre companies with productions in Arlington, VA, and Winston-Salem, NC, will kick off the new year with two productions at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA.
Embarking on their fifth season, the coming year's programming will challenge conventions, open minds and expand the expectations of theatrical experiences. "Moving into our fifth season, we will produce eight productions between our two cities and introduce more audiences to a new generation of theatre artists," said NRTC Artistic Director Joshua Morgan. "Theatre allows us to reflect. So this season, we are focusing on identity in all of its forms. It will be a journey through a season of hidden pasts, cultural understanding, character transformations and a few celebrities thrown in for fun."
Opening the year of programming from January 1 to 19 will be Late: A Cowboy Song at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA. This is the story of one woman's education and her search to find true love outside the box. Mary, who is always late and always married, meets a lady cowboy outside the city limits of Pittsburgh who teaches her how to ride a horse. In the meantime, Mary's husband, Crick, buys a painting with the last of their savings. Then, Mary and Crick have a baby, but they can't decide on the baby's name, or the baby's gender. Late is directed by Rex Daugherty and is designed by No Rules Company Member Cory Ryan Frank and will feature Alyssa Wilmoth, who appeared in NRTC's Stop Kiss.
Later in the year, No Rules Theatre Co. will announce two additional productions for the fall of 2014. In addition to the main productions in both cities, NRTC will hold the annual RuleBreaker Award in Washington on June 23, 2014, and in Winston-Salem on October 20, 2014. The most recent RuleBreaker Award in Winston-Salem raised more than $100,000 in support of the theatre's operations and to start a new community arts fund in Winston-Salem.
"In this past season, we saw some of our greatest accomplishments yet," said Violette Jacoson, chair of the NRTC Board of Directors. "We moved into residence at Signature Theatre, which is one of the top regional theatres in the country. We saw our audiences grow substantially in both cities. Three productions in a row broke box office records and became the organization's best sellers. NRTC shows remained Helen Hayes Award-recommended and received rave reviews from media with international influence. We expect our fifth season to continue breaking records."
