The Hurrah Players are set to present the latest adaptation of the
Roald Dahl classic, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, next month at The TCC Roper Performing Arts Center.
The stage production, titled
Willy Wonka, features memorable musical numbers including "The Candy Man", "Pure Imagination", "Oompa Loompa" and "I Want it Now" by Academy® and Grammy® award winners
Leslie Bricusse and
Anthony Newley.
Audiences will be delighted to see Hurrah's Artistic Director, Hugh Copeland, step from the director's chair to play the tour-de-force title role of "Willy Wonka". In the history of Hurrah Players, "Willy Wonka' is the only character role Copeland ever plays. When asked why this particular role appeals to him, Copeland relates "[Wonka] believes in the good in children, the rewards of honesty and love, and the joy of living life with hope on the soaring wings of imagination."
This same philosophy is also evident in Copeland's personal recipe for success with Virginia's Leading Family Theatre Company. Under his direction for 28 years, The Hurrah Players has been a thriving playground for both children and adults to play, to learn and to dream.
Joining Hugh on stage are 64 of Hampton Roads' most talented adults and children, including Chesapeake 5th grader, Ben Branigan, in the role of "Charlie Bucket". With choreography by Lisa Wallace and musical direction by Debra Kern, when this beloved musical opens next month, it will surely be the sweetest ticket in town.
