The revised version of the cult musical "Carrie", which was seen Off-Broadway in 2012, will receive its a new production at the The Generic Theater in downtown Norfolk, VA this fall.

The Generic Theater general producer Jeannette Rainey, executive director Philip Odango and artistic directors Matthew Friedman and Jennifer Murphy present the Norfolk run. Performances will begin October 18 and is currently scheduled to run through November 10.

In recent years, the original writing team of Academy Award-winning composer Michael Gore ("Fame," "Terms of Endearment"), Academy Award-winning lyricistDean Pitchford ("Fame," "Footloose") and "Carrie" film screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen returned to work on "Carrie". The 2012 Off-Broadway production by MCC Theater featured additional songs and revisions.

"Carrie" will be directed by David Springstead, Sr. "The material is based on the work of Stephen King, a master of suspense and horror," says Springstead. "The chance to bring it to life on a live stage is exciting and challenging."

The musical centers on the tale of a tormented high school teenager, Carrie White, who discovers she has telekinetic powers. The young girl must cope with a fanatically religious mother and her own coming of age. When her friends push her too far on prom night, they find out how destructive bullying can be.

""Carrie" was an obvious choice for our "Season of Power"," says Murphy. "Beyond the obvious supernatural spectacles, there is a quiet coming of age power Carrie starts to realize within herself that is surprisingly touching and relatable."

""Carrie" is just not normal theater fare," says Rainey. "That's what you can expect at The Generic." Springstead agrees, "We're looking for actors who have strong voices. The score is technically demanding. This show is designed for serious performers who like being given the opportunity to be challenged and stretch their craft beyond what they're used to doing. Add to that the technical challenges this show brings, and it should be great fun figuring out how we can make it all work."

"Carrie" is presented through special arrangement with R & H Theatricals: www.rnh.com Auditions are scheduled for August 26, 27 & 28, 2013 at The Generic Theater, and the casting notice can be found at http://generictheater.org/auditions.html.
