Carol Piersol and 5th Wall Theatre are proud to announce their production of "The Toxic Avenger" (book and lyrics written by Joe DiPietro, music and lyrics written by David Bryan), a raucous rock musical based on the 1984 cult classic film of the same name. Keith Fitzgerald helms as director with a cast of talented Richmond performers: Alexander Sapp, Debra Wagoner, Rachel Rose Gilmour, William Anderson, and Chris Hester, with music direction by Starlet Knight and choreography by Emily Dandridge.
The Toxic Avenger is the musical adaptation of a 1984 superhero comedy horror film that, though virtually ignored upon its initial release, quickly became a cult classic thanks to its superhero antics, a little gruesome comedy, and a healthy dose of B-movie camp. The story of Melvin Ferd, an unassuming nerd who transforms into an unlikely superhero determined to save his polluted New Jersey hometown from crime and corruption, spawned an award-winning Off-Broadway musical that critics hailed as "exuberantly silly" and "hilariously funny." The show calls on just five actors to portray the whole array of the colorful characters who inhabit Melvin's beloved hometown of Tromaville, portraying everything from bullies and mobsters to old ladies and stiletto-wearing back-up singers. Set to a wailing rock score and dripping with comedy gold (or goo), this toxic tale of love, good versus evil, and the great responsibility that comes with falling into a vat of superhero-creating radioactive waste is a comedy musical experience not to be missed.
