Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Va., will host a special presentation of "The New Musical: DAVID," based on the Biblical story of David with original music. Written and produced by Danny Hamilton and Gary Richardson, the show will run for a limited engagement-only 21 performances-August 23 through September 8 at Barter Main Stage.

"David was a man after God's own heart and this is a musical that will capture the heart of all ages," said Lori Hester, director of patron services at Barter. This production follows the epic tale of David's rise from shepherd to singer, to warrior to king. Hamilton and Richardson mix storytelling and original music for this heroic tale of good vs. evil which focuses on the amazing things that can be accomplished when one's life is completely devoted to God.

In 2008, Barter Theatre first brought the Hamilton/Richardson team to Abingdon, for their production "The Witnesses." The team also wrote "The Child" and "The Rock and the Rabbi."

Richardson has special ties to the area; he graduated from Milligan College in Johnson City, Tenn., and he taught radio broadcasting at Dobyns-Bennet High School in Kingsport. He is a writer, teacher, broadcaster, pastor, storyteller, and former on-air host of "WORSHIP" on PAX-TV. He now permanently resides with his wife and family in the Tampa Bay area.

In addition to show creators Richardson and Hamilton, the performers include nine others to help tell the story of the King of Israel.

"I'm really looking forward to 'The New Musical: DAVID' playing at Barter Theatre. It's an inspiring Biblical story- brought to life by the talented team of Hamilton/Richardson. It's fun, moving and filled with incredible music," said Richard Rose, producing artistic director at Barter.
