From the author of "No Country For Old Men," and brought to life by the artists at Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Va., comes a story juxtaposing hope and despair; life and death. "The Sunset Limited" by Cormac McCarthy begins at Barter Theatre Stage II on September 11.

The characters, simply named Black (Jasper McGruder) and White (Michael Poisson), are as their names suggest. Death seems to be the desired escape for one, while a life filled with hope and faith provides meaning for the other. These two strangers are going to push and pull to get what they want from each other. Who will prevail? As they pose thought-provoking questions about why they believe what they believe; rich dialogue unfolds in this intense and gripping story.

"The play tells the story of two men going for what their hearts desire; what they think they need so deeply that it consumes them. If you had a very limited time to try to talk one down from a figurative or literal ledge, what would you say to them? What would you ask them?" asks Lori Hester, director of patron services.

Tricia Matthews directs this two-character play starring Jasper McGruder and Michael Poisson. Recently acclaimed for her direction of McGruder in "Looking Over the President's Shoulder," Matthews goes for the jugular of truth and authenticity, believes McGruder.

"Two characters argue their beliefs; what they believe makes life worth living or not," said Tricia Matthews. "Black and White. But black and white make grey, and life is filled with a lot of grey. Grey is the exciting part. This play is all about that struggle-searching for the imperfect shade of grey."

As part of Barter Theatre's special 360° Panel Series, before and after performances on September 11 and 16 Barter artists and other experts will lead an audience discussion to examine the shades of grey in this show. 360° Panels are included in the purchase of a ticket for listed nights.

Tickets are $27, $32 and $34. For more information about "The Sunset Limited," visit BarterTheatre.com or call 276.628.3991. Discount dinner and lodging packages with Barter Theatre are available.
