This is the same critically acclaimed show Shirley Jones is performing throughout the country, including her performance at the Café Carlyle in New York City. It continues to surprise audiences with its first-rate quality entertainment. American film critic for The New York Observer Rex Reed said, "She's not only musical, but her singing seems to be personal-and spiritual, too. Music has always been in her. It's fun to have her back in town, sharing her taste and her tonsils. An evening with Shirley Jones makes music sound purer and safer. You go away smiling."
Along with singing from her popular musicals and television show The Partridge Family, Shirley Jones will discuss events that shaped her life and career. One story regards her start on Broadway. When she was 17, she went to New York and was able to audition for Oscar Hammerstein II. He asked her to sing again so his partner, Richard Rodgers, could hear. At that time, she did not know either one of them, but Rodgers and Hammerstein immediately escorted her across the street to the rehearsal of "South Pacific." Three weeks later, she was in the Broadway chorus, washing that man right out of her hair.
The week of Shirley Jones' arrival to Abingdon, the Cinemall and the Arts Array Series will be showing two of her most memorable films: "Oklahoma!" (1955), playing Monday, November 10th at 7:00 p.m., and "Elmer Gantry" (1960), featuring her Academy Award winning performance, on Tuesday, November 11th at 7:00 p.m.
