The play "Survivor's Guilt or The Jumping Off Point" by Virginian playwright Alex Flanigan will be produced at Liminality Theatre Company in Winchester, VA October 13th-14th. Liminality Theatre Company is a student-run theatre, comprised of Shenandoah University students. Their mission statement details their goal to create work outside the idea of traditional theatre.

I was lucky enough to sit down with the Director of "Survivor's Guilt or The Jumping Off Point" and co-creator of the Liminality Theatre Company, Avery Sedlacek, to hear about the process of working on a new play and being free from academic expectations.

Tell me a little about where you're from and where you go to school

My name is Avery Sedlacek, I'm from Jacksonville Florida and I am currently receiving my BFA in Acting from Shenandoah University in Winchester Virginia.

How did Liminality get started?

Liminality was started in the late Fall of 2016. The company was started by Richard Colley, Madison Schultes, John Mora and I with the intention of creating a safe environment for young playwrights to see their full-length works produced in an intimate setting.

What's your season look like for this upcoming year?

After Survivors guilt we will round up our Fall 2017 season with the play "Femme" an all-female movement festival that pays tribute to different female figures from famous legends and folklore. Our spring season will include "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea" by John Patrick Shanley, "Broke" a staged reading of an original play by JulIan Robertson, and a special event to round out the season.

What drew you to picking "Survivor's Guilt" for your 2017-2018 Season?

This play is a lesson on friendship and being there for others and that is what drew me to this story. It is a show that discusses large concepts and hot topics but at its core, it deals with what it means to be there for another human being when they need it most. I wanted to share that story because I believe it's something we could all get better at.

What's been your favorite part of the rehearsal process?

Getting to work with talented hard working actors like Dorian Davis and Jaya Joshi as well as an incredible writer like Alex Flanigan. This is my second process now working on a world premiere with the writer present for the rehearsal process and as a director that's as spoiled as you can be.

Why should people see "Survivor's Guilt"?

As I said before this is a show that teaches us how to care for others regardless of race, color, religion, age or previous experiences with one another. I believe now more than ever this is a lesson we need to be reminded of.
