Arts on the Horizon, the DC metro area's only theatre company exclusively focused on creating original work for children ages 0 - 6, presents Blossom's Rainbow tonight, March 11 - 29, 2015 at the Athenaeum in Alexandria, VA.

Blossom's Rainbow brings the beauty, joy, and magic of DC's cherry blossoms to young children ages 2 - 5 and their families through this world-premiere performance. This nonverbal play, created, directed and choreographed by Margot Greenlee, features live music composed and performed by taiko artist Mark H Rooney.

A painter's brush sets a young cherry blossom's world into motion. Infused with whimsical dance, vibrant colors, and dynamic live music, join Blossom on her journey from the red mountains down to the indigo city in this new piece that celebrates Japanese culture. Margot Greenlee animates the story of Blossom's life with her original choreography, which draws on elements of kabuki, modern dance, and traditional Japanese dance. The dynamic percussion of taiko artist Mark H Rooney paints an acoustic landscape, and he invites very young audiences to join in through engaging call-and-response.

The cast features local professional performers Tuyet Thi Pham and Jacob Yeh. Creator, director, and choreographer Margot Greenlee was a company member of Dance Exchange under the direction of Liz Lerman from 1999 to 2007 and is currently an associate artist with the company. Margot is a nationally recognized master teaching artist with a 20-year record leading movement programs for artistic, educational, and healthcare settings. Blossom's Rainbow draws on her experiences creating new work at the Kyoto Center for the Performing Arts in collaboration with Japan's Contemporary Dance Network. Mark H Rooney has been studying, performing, and teaching the art of taiko for the past 16 years in Japan, Europe, and the United States. Mark has worked with some of today's most renowned taiko performers, including KODO and Marco Lienhard's Taikoza.

2015 NATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL - Following the performances in Alexandria, Virginia, Blossom's Rainbow will be performed in Washington, DC at the Atlas Performing Arts Center as an event of the 2015 National Cherry Blossom Festival. The show will open on Friday, April 3 with performances through Saturday, April 11.

ABOUT ARTS ON THE HORIZON - Founded in 2009, Arts on the Horizon is a non-profit theatre with a specific focus of providing performances and education programs for the very young. Our original performances are designed to take place in an intimate setting where children not only feel comfortable to learn and explore, but are also an integral part of the performance. We have the utmost respect for children and want what may be their first theatrical performance to entertain them, challenge them, spark creativity and enhance the imaginative play in which many children this age engage. Since 2011, our non-verbal productions have been performed on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Workhouse Arts Center, The Athenaeum and other venues and schools in the DC metro area. In May 2013, the company performed at Cleveland's PlayhouseSquare as part of the national One Theatre World Festival. In addition to our performances, we also offer education programs, which provide targeted exploration of themes and ideas in order to help children enhance their language development, socialization, and fine and gross motor skills; all within a meaningful, nurturing environment where children can develop their sense of self and increase their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
