Notes from the Director: This is an ensemble production. There are no leads. It can be done with as few as six actors, but I would like to cast at least twenty. Everyone who is cast will have a song, a monologue, or possibly both. Most people will be asked to dance as part of the ensemble.
I am looking for as diverse a cast as I can get. However you identify, there is a role for you. Having said that we cast according to our best assessment of (1) your talent, and (2) how well you fit the role. We do NOT pre-cast. Casting will be done by a committee.
If you are auditioning for a role with a song, please come to the audition prepared to sing a song that is NOT from the show. If you bring sheet music our conductor will accompany you. If you prefer to sing a capella, that’s fine as well (but you’ll sound better with accompaniment).
I will try to mete out the speeches and song lyrics of the characters known simply as Man 1, 2, and 3, and Woman 1, 2, 3, but I reserve the right to cast these as six roles. CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS (* means the character sings):
*Man 1, 2, 3, Woman 1, 2, 3: All six appear throughout the show, singing here and there, and delivering a line of dialogue here and there.
*Mike Dillard: Ironworker, 30s or older (Monologue, no song) and Man 3 (sings), at least occasionally. As the Ironworker he is a laborer, a “hard working man.” BUT, he’s a reader, and nobody’s fool.
Amanda McKenny: Project manager, 30s- 2 short Monologues. Dressed in a business suit.
Women in Cubicle (2) (part of Amanda’s monologue): One line each
Men in cubicle (2) (part of Amanda’s monologue): One line each
*Freddy: Fast food worker, Late teens; it’s his first job- song/monologue (sort of a spoken song in parts, sung in other parts). Young, bright eyed, eager, ambitious. (Man 1, Man 3, Woman 1, 2, 3, and Rex are in Freddy’s song)
Rex: Money Manager- Monologue, and 3 lines of dialogue as Man 3. A “suit guy.” Very into his work and a raging capitalist; Republican to the bone. (Rex is in Mike’s monologue, Freddy’s song)
*Rose Hoffman: Teacher, older, at least 50s, could be 60s- Monologue/Song is part spoken, part sung. She is very much the veteran, “old school” teacher. “In Charge!”
Terry Mason: Flight Attendant, 20s. Monologue-Just as Rose describes her- not terribly bright, never any trouble, a lovely person.
*Frank Decker: Interstate trucker. Short monologue, LONG song, short monologue, then a bit of dialogue. (Man 1, 2, 3, Woman 1, 2, 3, Phone Operator (Raj- could be M or F) are in the dialogue). |

Raj Chadha: Operator’s voice and Operator. Any age, any gender-
Sharon Atkins: Receptionist. Monologue, Dialogue with Raj.
*Kate Rushton: Housewife. 30s. Song (some is spoken) with Woman 1, 2, 3 (possibly all the women in the cast). Then dialogue with Conrad.
Conrad Swibel: UPS man. 20s-40s. Dialogue, then monologue. Roberta screams at end of monologue.
Roberta Vicker: Prostitute. 20s-40s. Monologues (3) interspersed with those of Candy Cunningham.
Candy Cunningham: Fundraiser: 40s or older. Monologues (2), interspersed with those of Roberta Vicker.
*Grace Clements: Factory worker. 30s-40s. Monologue/song. With Woman 1, 2, 3, Man 1, 2, 3 (perhaps the entire cast) in the song.
Allen Epstein: Community Organizer. 40s, ideally but could be any age. Monologue
INTERMISSION
*Anthony Coelho: Stone Mason. 50s, ideally but definitely 40 or older. He has 2 monologues, then later one line, and he works while Singer sings (Or I may have Anthony sing the song). OR *Singer: Sings the Stone Mason song.
Eddie Jaffe: Publicist. 58 years old (or able to “pass” for 58). Monologue.
*Delores Dante: Waitress. Ideally 40s or 50s. Monologue, song. With Customers- Man 1, 2, 3, Woman 1, 2, 3. |

*Joe Zutty: Retiree. 60s-70s. Monologue/song.
Tom Patrick: Fireman. 30s (+/-). Monologues (2), one line of dialogue. With Man 2.
*Utkarsh Trujillo: Caregiver. Ideally 40s-50s. Song. With Theresa Liu.
*Theresa Liu: Nanny. Ideally 30s but could be any age. Song with Utkarsh Trujillo.
*Maggie Holmes: Cleaning woman. Ideally an older woman of color. Monologue, song, with Woman 1, 2, 3 or perhaps all the women in the cast.
Ralph Werner: Salesman, 19. Monologue.
Charlie Blossom: 19, works in a newsroom. Monologue. Radical leftist, but his “tough guy” thing has a lot of innocence in it.
Song: “Fathers and Sons” Mike Dillard with the whole cast.
*Mike Dillard: Song, monologue as just above. Mike is also the first character listed above.
Note about two of the songs:
