The New Britain Youth Theater Teen Company will hold auditions for its first full musical, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, on Monday, November 3, and Thursday, November 6, at 6:00 p.m. at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA at 50 High Street in New Britain. The production will begin rehearsals at the YMCA with performances planned for February. Jim Williams will direct, and Angela Klimaytis will be musical director. Rehearsals are planned for Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, but not every actor will be called to each rehearsal. In addition to performance, a promotional event is being planned with the Mark Twain House in Hartford.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a musical adaptation of one of the best loved stories in American literature. Young Tom Sawyer gets himself into never-ending mischief with best friend Huck Finn, tricks his friends into white-washing a fence for him, sweetens up to Becky Thatcher, hides from Aunt Polly, and narrowly escapes danger in a thrilling and inspirational musical comedy for the whole family. The musical was conceived and written by award-winning playwright Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo) with music and lyrics by Grammy-winning country music songwriter Don Schlitz.
Auditions are open to 12 to 19 year-olds from any town, and a diverse cast with all levels of experience is sought. Those auditioning should prepare either 16 measures of a ballad or 32 measures of an up-tempo song. Actors will also be given pages from the script to read at auditions.
In addition to auditions, Musical Director Angela Klimaytis will hold a Musical Theater Audition Workshop on Thursday, October 30, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. for anyone who would like to improve their musical audition skills. The workshop is open to anyone ages 12 to 19, but preference will be given to those who plan to audition for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
To register for auditions and/or the workshop, call (860) 515-8115 or email auditions@nbyt.org. Those cast will be asked to pay a participation fee of $100. No one, however, will be turned away for inability to pay, so please ask about financial assistance if necessary. Teens may also call with interest in production and backstage positions.
