Newnan Theatre Company proudly announces auditions for the first production of their 2015-16 season, The Wizard of Oz , based on the classic story by L. Frank Baum, with music and lyrics of the MGM motion picture score by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg and book adaptation by John Kane from the motion picture score.
Auditions will take place at NTC for ADULTS ONLY (18 +) on Sunday June 28th from 7-10pm and Tuesday June 30th from 7-10pm. Auditions for CHILDREN ONLY (8-12) with take place on Monday June 29th from 7-9pm. Call backs will be Wednesday July 1st by invitation only from 7-10pm.
ADULTS 18+ please prepare 2 contrasting 32 bar selections (one can be from the show, the other or both from a Broadway show in the same style of The Wizard of Oz) An accompanist will be provide, please bring all sheet music in your correct key. No a Capella or tracks will be heard. Wear/bring comfortable clothes/shoes for a dance call as well. Those interested in auditioning for the Wicked Witch or The Wizard of Oz, please prepare a 1-2 minute monologue showing off your best character work.
CHILDREN ages 8-12 please prepare the first 32 bars of one of the 3 following songs in the original key. Tracks for these songs WILL be provided. Shy from Once Upon A Mattress, Consider Yourself from Oliver and Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead from The Wizard Of Oz . Wear/bring comfortable clothes for a dance call. (Looking for little girls with ballet/pointe experience and boys with tap/clogging experience, but not necessary to audition)
Casting breakdown is as follows, all roles available:
Dorothy Gale: 16-18 year old girl (audition age 16-25) (Mezzo/mix) low G to E. Very strong singer with a full sound. A young, headstrong but caring adventurous young lady. Should be a strong triple threat.
Aunt Em/Glinda the Good Witch: Female 25 plus. Experienced Mezzo/Soprano (G to middle C) This role is doubled and will be quit a fun challenge. Aunt Em is a sturdy, hardworking, salt of the earth farm woman-loves Dorothy very much. Glinda is a very lovely and calming presence. She holsd all the knowledge Dorothy needs to get back home.
Uncle Henry/Emerald City Guard: Male 35 plus. Uncle Henry is an honest, hardworking man-he is also kind and loves Dorothy. The Guard (baritone (Bb to Be)) is a quirky character with a strong comic voice/big presence.
Hunk/Scarecrow: Male 25+ (Strong Baritone up to f# with opt, Ab) Hunk is a farmhand for the Gale farm. He tries to offer Dorothy advice and cares deeply for her. The Scarecrow is a challenging physical role requiring flexibility and impeccable comic timing. This will be a very physically demanding role.
Hickory/Tin Man: Male 25+ (Strong Baritone/Tenor to G) Hickory is a farmhand for the Gale farm. He is a sweet, caring man. The Tin Man is another physically demanding role, as he must act like he is made of tin-stiff and robotic. He is sweet and charming.
Zeke/Cowardly Lion: Male 25+ (Strong Baritone to F) Zeke is a farmhand for the Gale Farm and must show inklings of the Cowardly Lion. Both he and the Lion are big comedic guys with the need for strong comedic timing and character vocals, both speaking and singing.
Miss Gulch/Wicked Witch of the West: Female 35+ (Non-singing) One of the best villains, hands down. This is a role that requires an amazing character actor ready to sink their teeth in to pure badness! Needs great physical and vocal character experience. A dream role for a character actresses!
Professor Marvel/Wizard of Oz: Male 35+(Non-singing) A great dual character role for an actor. Both have strong personalities and require a strong stage presence.
Munchkins/Monkeys: Kids ages 8-12. Height restrictions may apply. Seeking 15-20 young adults for Munchkins-many featured speaking/singing/dancing roles. Monkeys-gymnastic ability a plus. Must be able to maintain physical stance for extended periods of time.
Adult Chorus: Adults 18+ They will be very busy! They will play an important part of the tornado, portray poppies, Jitterbugs, Ozians, the Winkie guards. Also, there are 3 men featured as crows in the Scarecrow number and 3 females as Trees in the Tin man number. We are looking for strong singers and dancers. (Tap experience is a plus)
The show will be directed by Jeni Dees and Musical Director is Johnny Halloway. Performance Dates are September 3-6th and 10-13th. Rehearsals will begin July 6th, 3-4 days a week. Reasonable conflicts can be worked around, but the leading characters need to be prepared for a full commitment. All must be available for the entire tech week, starting August 30th.
All roles are open, non-equity and non-paying. NTC does not charge production fees of any kind.
