Semifinalists and Finalists will compete before a live audience on May 21
SAN DIEGO (April 20, 2012)—Preliminary round auditions for the 2012 Globe Honors and The Road to the Jimmy™ Awards, an annual competition recognizing excellence in high school theater, will take place on May 5, 6 and 7 at The Old Globe. Presented annually by The Old Globe, and this year in association withBroadway/San Diego – A Nederlander Presentation, final rounds will take place on May 21 at 8:00 p.m. on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, and conclude with the announcement of the winners. There is no fee to participate in the Globe Honors and The Road to the Jimmy™ Awards program. High school students may compete in one of four categories: Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theatre, Spoken Theatre, Technical Theatre and leading role in a High School Musical.
Winners of all Globe Honors categories will receive $1,000 scholarships and the winners of the Musical, Spoken and Technical Theater categories will participate in a two-day trip to Los Angeles where they will go behind the scenes at the Center Theatre Group, see a production of War Horse at the Ahmanson Theatre and visit the historic Pantages Theatre. The Leading Actor and Actress in a High School Musical winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to participate in the National High School Musical Theater Awards/The Jimmy™ Awards (NHSMTA) competition to be held on June 25 at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway.
The Musical, Spoken and Technical Theater categories require that the students have performed in or worked on any production in or out of school. To audition for the Leading Actor or Actress in a High School Musical categories, students must have played the lead in a musical production at their school during the 2011-12 school year. (High school productions must open by June 1, 2012.) Participants must be residents of San Diego County. Students must be currently enrolled in grades 9 – 12 in a public, private, charter or home school in San Diego County.
Students from over 30 San Diego high schools compete annually in the Globe Honors competition. 2010 winner Katie Sapper from Academy of Our Lady of Peace was one of three leading actresses in the final round of competition at NHSMTA/The Jimmy™ Awards in New York City. Jimmy™ Award winners are selected by a panel of industry experts and receive scholarships for merit and need-based assistance to attend New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, New Studio on Broadway: Acting and Music Theatre, contingent upon acceptance into the New Studio and New York University.
The National High School Musical Theatre Awards is an annual celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater established by the Pittsburgh CLO and Nederlander Alliances, LLC. The program recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performance and honors teachers and their schools’ commitment to excellence in performing arts education. Activities will commence in New York City on June 20, with rehearsals, master classes, private coaching and interviews with theater professionals leading up to the live awards show where the Jimmy™ Award (named for legendary Broadway producer and theater owner James M. Nederlander) for Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress will be presented on June 25.
Founded by David T. Nederlander in 1912, the Nederlander Organization is currently celebrating 100 years of theater development, ownership, management and production under the guidance of James M. Nederlander. Broadway/San Diego – A Nederlander Presentation is part of the nationally recognized Nederlander Producing Company of America and has presented over 325 shows and events during its 35-year history.
