Provincetown Theater Auditions: The Laramie Project
Directed by an original creator of The Laramie Project,
Leigh Fondakowski, the production will mark the 20th anniversary
of the death of Matthew Shepard this fall.
Artistic Director David Drake is proud to announce that on August 25th, 26th, and 27th, the Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford Street, will hold auditions for non-union performers for its fall production of The Laramie Project. The production will be directed by the Head Writer of the Tectonic Theater Company, Leigh Fondakowski, who was a guiding dramaturgical force in the creation of this play by Moises Kaufman’s company, and which the New York Times recently cited as one of “The 25 Best American Plays since Angels in America.”
The Laramie Project centers on the reaction of the community of Laramie, Wyoming following the 1998 murder of the gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard. The Provincetown Theater production -- which runs October 11th thru 28th -- will honor Shepard’s indelible legacy by performing The Laramie Project on the 20th anniversary of his death. Audience discussions, lead by Fondakowski, will follow selected performances.
For the production, Fondakowski is seeking 12-15 non-union actors (ages 12 through 70) to portray more than sixty characters that comprise the play’s series of short scenes and monologues. A selection of sides from the script will be available for pick-up beginning Monday, August 20th at the Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford Street, Provincetown, MA, 02657 during business hours, or at the auditions themselves.
AUDITIONS:
Auditions will take place at the Provincetown Theater from 2-6pm on Saturday, August 25th and on Sunday, August 26th. Auditions will also be held on Monday, August 27th from 11am-5pm. After signing in, those auditioning will be seen on a first come, first serve basis.
Rehearsals for The Laramie Project will begin Saturday, September 11th, and will primarily be during the weeknight evenings from 6-10pm, as well as on Saturdays and/or Sundays from 12noon-6pm. The production will be as flexible as possible to accommodate work schedules.
The Laramie Project opens Oct 11th, and plays thru Oct 28th on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7pm, and Sundays at 2pm.
A non-union production, performers who are cast will receive a $200. honorarium for their participation in the production. Also sought is a non-union production stage manager for the rehearsal and performance schedule. This individual will receive an honorarium of $1000. DIRECTOR:
Leigh Fondakowski was the Head Writer of The Laramie Project and has been a member of Tectonic Theatre Project since 1995. She is an Emmy nominated co-screenwriter for the adaptation of The Laramie Project for HBO, and a co-writer of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. Her play, The People's Temple, has been performed under her direction at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, American Theater Company and The Guthrie Theater, and received the Glickman Award for Best New Play in the Bay Area in 2005. Another original play, I Think I Like Girls, premiered at Encore Theater in San Francisco under her direction and was voted one of the top 10 plays of 2002 by The Advocate. Leigh is a 2007 recipient of the NEA/TCG Theatre Residency Program for Playwrights and a 2009 MacDowell Colony Fellow. She has been a visiting artist and an Imagine Fund fellow at the University of Minnesota, and has recently written a new play about 19th-century American actress Charlotte Cushman. She is a founding member of The Study Group. Her first work of non-fiction, Stories from Jonestown, was published in 2012 by the University of Minnesota press. Off-Broadway last season, her play Spill -- about the biggest environmental disaster in U.S. history, the 2001 oil explosions in the Gulf of Mexico -- premiered at New York’s Obie Award-winning Ensemble Studio Theater in a production that she also directed. In association with the prestigious global arts organization, The Orchard Project, Leigh is a founding member of their 2018 NYC Greenhouse program.
