SYNOPSIS: Have you ever owned a dog, loved a dog, or wanted to wring a dog's neck? Sylvia is a modern romantic comedy about a marriage and a dog. Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after 22 years of raising their children in the suburbs. Greg's career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate's career as a public-school English teacher is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park bearing only the name Sylvia on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of lab and poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between them. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. To heighten the play's comedy, A. R. Gurney has Sylvia talking, cussing, yet still chasing cats, as Greg and Kate's marriage faces hilarious and touching complications.

Roles available, 1 woman, 2 men (the role of SYLVIA has been cast):

KATE (age range: 40s-60s)
Kate is happy about her new-found life in the city with Greg; and is particularly passionate about bringing Shakespeare to inner city public schools in New York City. However, she has little use for Greg's issues and even less for his newfound best friend, Sylvia. She is immediately put off by the idea of a dog in the household, and she tolerates Sylvia out of love for Greg.

GREG (age range: 40s-60s)
Greg is also happy about his new life in the city, but he is also searching for spiritual validation. Sylvia seems to be awakening his instincts and love of mankind. Around Sylvia, his euphoric demeanor distracts him from work, marriage, and social graces. Sylvia is his mid-life crisis, and nothing makes him happier. Actor must display a wide range of quiet male emotion; he loves his suddenly-adopted dog, Sylvia, but seems to be going through an early midlife crisis in his work and his marriage.

TOM/PHYLLIS/LESLIE (age range: 30s-55. Note: these roles will be played by one actor)
TOM is a young man Greg meets at the dog park. He has a male dog that becomes Sylvia's lust interest. Requires a Jersey/Brooklyn accent.
PHYLLIS is a snobby, New York socialite friend of Kate's. She is put off when Sylvia treats her the way all dogs address new acquaintances.
LESLIE is the psychiatrist Kate visits to sort out the problems in her marriage. Leslie is very good at psychological banter, but Greg's relationship to Sylvia proves to push her/him over the edge. Leslie will be dressed very ambiguously as neither man nor woman.
