Spring Awakening is a rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. It is based on the German play of the same name by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th-century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality as they journey from adolescence to adulthood with poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable. The landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality and sexuality with an alternative rock & roll score.

The address for auditions and arrival time will be provided after an RSVP is received.
All ‘teenage characters’ will be cast with actors 18 years of age and older due to the adult content of the show.You will also receive an audition form to complete prior to coming to audition.
Walk-ins for auditions will not be permitted.
We will attempt to accommodate your preferred date.
However, we will need to insure that each night is manageable and fair to all candidates due to high turnout. Therefore we may ask you to attend on a different date.
Please communicate all known conflicts you will have on your audition form. We appreciate your flexibility.
All actors are non-paid.

Your audition will include learning a short piece of choreography and singing a prepared audition song of 16-20 bars of music.
An accompanist will be provided.
No CD/mp3/iPod tracks may be used.
You may be asked to sing a cappella to test your vocal range.
Dress appropriately as you will learn choreography first before your vocal audition.
Headshots are preferred but not required as photos will be taken of each auditioning actor.
Auditioning status notification will be sent via e-mail following the final night of auditions.
All actors are expected to arrive promptly for their audition.

Character Breakdown:
Wendla
Innocent. With every passing day, she grows more curious about the world around her and her changing body. She is both vulnerable and a willing participant in her evolution and explores her newly-found sexuality with Melchior.

Melchior
A smart, headstrong boy who refuses to bow down to society's rules. An atheist and radical student who struggles with his intense feelings for Wendla and his awakening sexual urges.

Martha
A schoolgirl who faces constant physical abuse from her father. She harbors a secret crush towards Moritz.

Moritz
Melchior's best friend, a troubled student. He desperately tries to please his father, but always seems to disappoint him. His haunting sexual dreams and academic failures eventually drive him to suicidal thoughts.

Thea
Wendla's best friend. A schoolgirl who tries to stay innocent and pure.

Hanschen
A rather narcissistic schoolmate of Melchior's. He is comfortable with his own sexuality and uses his looks and intelligence to captivate Ernst.

Anna
A German schoolgirl and Martha's best friend. Optimistic and a bit naive, she has a difficult time understanding Martha's trials.

Ernst
A schoolmate of Melchior's. Naive and easily manipulated, which allows him to fall in love with Hanschen.

Ilse
Martha's sister, who was also abused and has run away from home to live in an artists' colony. She reaches out to her old friend Moritz in the last moments of his life.

Georg
A clumsy schoolmate of Melchoir's. He is overcome with his feelings for his piano teacher.

A classmate of Melchior's. He struggles with feelings he considers inappropriate.

Adult Woman
Plays variety of rigid adult roles. Characters include: FRAU BERGMAN, Wendla's mother; FRAULEIN KNUPPELDICK; FRAULEIN GROSSEBUSTENHALTER; FRAU GABOR, Melchior's mother; and FRAU BESSELL, Martha's mother.

Adult Man
Plays a variety of rigid adult roles. Characters include: HERR SONNENSTITCH, the boys' teacher; HEADMASTER KNOCHENBRUCH; HERR NEUMANN, Ilse's father; HERR RILOW, Hanschen's father; HERR STEIFEL, Moritz's father; FATHER KAULBACH; DOCTOR VON BRAUSEPULVER; HERR GABOR, Melchior's father; and SCHMIDT.

Round Two: Call Back Audition

Tuesday, June 21, @ 7:00 p.m.
Auditioning actors that are called back will be provided a character song to prepare in advance and will be expected to dance again.

Rehearsal and Performance Dates

Casting Announced, Wednesday, June 22, 2016.
First Read/Sing Through, Thursday, June 23, 2016 @ 7:00 p.m.
Music only rehearsals are Monday through Thursday June 27th through July 7th
Full rehearsals begin Tuesday, July 12th.
Rehearsals are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 10pm, from July 12th through September 1st.
Occasional Saturday dance rehearsals will be scheduled.
All performers are expected to sign an agreement to abide by the policies set by the Board of Directors of mad Theatre of Tampa, Inc.
