INVITES STUDENTS TO AUDITION FOR FALL JAZZ CREATIVE MUSIC AND MUSICAL THEATER AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Greater Philadelphia area students are encouraged to audition for Showstoppers Musical Theater Program, This Saturday August 29th & again on Saturday September 12th

and auditions for the Creative Music Program for Jazz September 19th

The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts invites students in the Greater Philadelphia Area to audition for their two upcoming year-long after-school programs; Show Stoppers Musical Theater Program and The Creative Music Program for Jazz. Auditions for Show Stoppers Fall semester will be held twice on Saturday, August 29th (noon) and Saturday, September 12th (2 p.m.) in the Merck arts Education Center on tier two of the Kimmel Center. CMP Fall Auditions will be held the following week, Saturday September 19th (noon) in the same location. These exhilarating FREE after-school programs will allow students to gain invaluable experience as they explore the expansive field of creative jazz music and musical theater.

“We are very excited to begin another outstanding semester of the Kimmel Center’s Show Stoppers and our Creative Music Program for Jazz,” said Kimmel Center Education Manager, Carol Frazier. “It is so rewarding to be able to meet, teach and engage with so many talented young individuals who share our passion for creative music and the world of performing arts.

Show Stoppers, under the seasoned leadership of Frazier, encourages young musical theater artists to explore their talents in acting, singing and dancing, as they engage in a weekly engaging and fast -paced instruction group-setting with fellow singers, dancers and actors. All sessions are taught by expert teaching artists and performers.

All Show Stoppers applicants must attend high school (grades 9-12) in the Philadelphia, Greater Philadelphia and tri-state area. Applicants will be required to audition in three genres where they will be evaluated on their ability in all three skills and their response to direction.

1) Vocal: Students will be asked to sing 32 measures of a song of their choice from a legitimate Broadway production. In addition, students will perform solo and in an ensemble a song from a musical selected by the audition committee. A link to the song has been provided.

2) Acting: Students will prepare a 45 second monologue or speech from a play. Students will also be required to read an excerpt of a script selected by the audition committee. Applicants must be familiar with improvisation. A link demonstrating monologue technique has been provided.

3) Dance: Students must be prepared to learn and execute new choreography on the spot taught by the program's dance instructor. They will need to wear loose clothing for movement. Students are to bring jazz shoes, if possible. NO JEANS or inappropriate clothing.

Students accepted into the Show Stoppers program will attend weekly sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Kimmel Center. During each session, students will have the opportunity to receive instruction in theater art, vocal and dance techniques taught by professionally acclaimed teaching artists and renowned actors from touring Broadway shows. The season will conclude with a Fall Showcase performance in the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater on December 18th.

The Kimmel Center Creative Music Program for Jazz is a free school year music program, intended for students between the ages of 11 and 20. This annual program, now in its 5th year focuses on stimulation of each student’s individual creativity, while simultaneously developing his/her musicianship skills through utilizing the framework of jazz tradition. TheCreative Music Program includes expert instruction in: theory, harmony, rhythm skills, ear training, improvisation, collective composition, jazz history, sight reading, and more! The Curriculum, under the direction of Anthony Tidd, Creative Music Program Director,provides three varied levels of experiences, with students being placed into one of three ensembles based on a unique musician evaluation process.
