Please call Houston Grand Opera’s rehearsal department at 713-980-8679 to register for an audition. On April 14 and 17, Houston Grand Opera will hold auditions for actors for the leading role of “Captain Andy” and for the supporting roles of “Steve/Manager,” “Pete/Emcee,” “Sheriff/Maitre d’” and “Irish Landlady” in a production of the classic musical SHOW BOAT to be staged during HGO’s 2012-13 season.
SHOW BOAT will be directed by Francesca Zambello, choreographed by Michele Lynch, and conducted by HGO’s Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers.
Captain Andy – Captain Andy is the heart and soul of the show boat. A mature Caucasian man who is a true father figure, not only for his teenage daughter, but for all the “traveling family” on the boat – with a gift for humor and pathos. He must be physically flexible and have excellent movement skills. Charismatic – with the ability to sustain long monologues. This is not really a singing role, but musical skills are a plus.
Steve/Manager – A conventionally handsome Caucasian leading-man type.
Pete/Emcee – A rough, gruff, scary-looking Caucasian male.
Sheriff/Maitre d’ – Good-ol’-boy, “bubba” type. Caucasian male. Irish Landlady - Mature Caucasian female with a good Irish accent.
All interested candidates should have FULL AVAILABILITY to be called up to 30 hours per week during the period of December 13, 2012 through February 9, 2013. The terms of engagement for the artist selected as Captain Andy are negotiable. Artists selected for the other acting roles mentioned above will be compensated from $1,000 to $1,155 per week, depending on doublings. Preliminary auditions will be held in Houston on Saturday, April 14, 2012, with the final rounds on Tuesday, April 17, 2012.
