RUMORS and SWEET CHARITY - The Candlelight Theatre

The Candlelight Theatre is presenting Rumors by Neil Simon, May 16 – June 21, 2020 and Sweet Charity with book by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, July 11 – August 23.

When: Monday and Tuesday February 24th and 25th
Time: 6:30 pm sign-in if auditioning for both; 8:00 pm sign-in for those only auditioning for Rumors.

Please come with headshot and resume stapled together, do not send in advance. All roles are open and paid. Restaurant opportunities available.
For Sweet Charity, please prepare 16 - 32 bars showing range and in the style of the show and be prepared to dance.

Rehearsals for Rumors will begin (approximately) March 28. Performances are May 16 – June 21, 2020 and generally Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Also scheduled: 2 Thursday evenings – May 28 and June 11 and 2 Wednesday matinees - May 20 and June 17.

Rehearsals for Sweet Charity will begin (approximately) May 23. Performances are July 11 – August 23, 2020 and generally Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Also scheduled: 1 Thursday evening – August 13, and 2 Wednesday matinees – July 22 and August 19.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN - RUMORS

Chris Gorman - late 20's-30's. Attractive, sarcastically funny lawyer who has recently quit smoking. A bit nervous/neurotic. Prone to get tipsy.

Ken Gorman - Well-dressed man. Mid 30's and up. A lawyer. Likes to be in control but doesn't often succeed. Pompous. High-Strung.

Claire Ganz - 30's/40's. Into gossip Seems amused by everything around her. Appearances matter to her. In control and controlling.

Leonard Ganz - Claire's husband . 30's-40's. Charley's accountant. Foul-mouthed and outspoken. A strong comedic role.

Cookie Cusack - 40's-50's. Hosts her on cooking show. Garish. Has a bad back. Dramatic . Some physical comedy.

Ernie Cusack - 40's-50's. Cookie's husband and Charlie's analyst. A bit smug/pretentious.

Glenn Cooper - 30's-40's. A candidate for the State Senate. Attractive. The camera loves him. Constantly worries about his image.

Cassie Cooper - 20's-30's. Trophy wife of Glen. Attractive and very spoiled. Constantly threatens divorce.

Officer Welch - No nonsense cop. 30's-50's. Wants to complete the investigation and just go home.

Officer Connie Pudney - 20's-30's. Welch's partner. New to the job.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN - SWEET CHARITY

Seeking a diverse cast of performers to capture the rhythms, vernacular and fun of 1960s New York. All roles, except for Charity, will double as other roles (and/or as ensemble) throughout the show. Seeking excellent singers and dancers who are also good comedic character actors who can play multiple roles.

Charity Hope Valentine - 20's-30's. (Alto/Mezzo) Her name sums her up well. A taxi dancer at the Fandango Ballroom. Kind, ambitious, gullible, happy-go-lucky woman who is always searching for love.

Helene - 20's-30's. (Alto/Mezzo) Close friend of Charity and fellow dancer at the Fandango. Feisty and confident.

Nickie - 20's-30's. (Alto/Mezzo). Also close to Charity and a dancer at the club. Assumes the maternal role over the girls. Has seen it all and is quick with advice.

Oscar Lindquist - 20's/30's. (Baritone) Educated. Well-spoken man but shy and a bit gawky. Works as an actuary. Falls in love with Charity but struggles with her profession. Will double as Charlie, Charity’s first boyfriend.

Herman - 30's-50's. (Tenor) Runs the Fandango. Everything annoys him. Authoritative but with a heart of gold.

Vittorio Vidal - 30's-40's. (Bari/Tenor) Famous Italian movie star. Smooth. A gentle soul. Italian accent.

Daddy Brubeck - 30's-50's. (Bari/Tenor) Leader of the Rhythym of Life Church. A spiritual, laid-back kind of guy.

Other speaking roles will be assigned from the ensemble (or doubled from the above list), such as: other Fandango Ballroom girls (Carmen, Rosie, Suzanne, Frenchy, Betsy, Elaine), Ursula (Vittorio’s girlfriend), Marvin the Fandango Regular, Manfred (Vittorio’s majordomo), etc.

Ensemble - Many featured singing/dancing/speaking roles such as Daddy Brubeck’s assistants, Pompeii Club Waiter, a Hostess, panhandlers, tourists, cops, New York citizens, etc.
