RE-WRITING THE DECLARATION - Governors State University

GovState's Theatre and Performance Studies presents...

Re-Writing the Declaration by Quenna Barrett
Directed by Quenna Barrett

Performance dates: November 1st-3rd in Governors State University's Sherman Hall

ABOUT THE PLAY:

What happens when a class of young Black women and non-binary folx of color take a trip to 1776?

A collage of time and space, a blend of character and self — the ensemble of Re-Writing the Declaration exists in both today and yesterday in order to change tomorrow. Believing that the founding fathers and documents never intended to include us, we consider the impacts of that founding on our lives today & realize it’s time to re-write the Declaration of Independence. On this journey, we visit some troubling moments in our collective past, while celebrating Blackness on the path towards freedom.

Catalyzed by the Movement for Black Lives, Re-Writing the Declaration is a devised, participatory play inviting audiences to center Black women, and femmes, non-binary, and trans folx of color, in order to free us all.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION:

This is a live production in front of an audience. Rehearsals will be held on campus with most rehearsals occurring in Sherman Hall.

This play will be partially devised, meaning that the cast will co-create some of the play’s content together. When we start rehearsals, unlike a typical process, there will not be an already fully set script—we will build it together!

CASTING:

Character/Ensemble Information:

Together, the ensemble will build a play that invites digital audiences to investigate the following questions:

  • How can a place truly ever be free to all?
  • How can we resist oppressing another in a quest for individual freedom and independence?

  • Collaborators of color, especially who identify as femme, women, trans women, or non-binary
  • Intergenerational Collaborators
