Breakdown

NOTE: Seeking well trained actors with strong classical and vocal skills.

MALE:

ROMEO
(20’s) Actor must be convincing as a teenager. Submit actors with a backround in Shakespeare. The character may be young, but this is not a starter role in Shakespeare. Romeo is the son and heir of Montague. Handsome, intelligent, sensitive, romantic. Though impulsive and immature, his idealism and passion make him extremely likable. He has intelligence, strength, passion, and searches for truth in a false universe. He finds it in Juliet. Lives in the middle of a violent feud between his family and the Capulets, but he is not interested in violence. The instant he lays eyes on Juliet he falls in love with her and forgets every other woman. He is also an affectionate and devoted friend to Benvolio, Mercutio and Friar Lawrence.

CAPULET
(late 40’s-50’s) Patriarch of the Capulet family, father of Juliet and enemy of Montague. Truly loves his daughter though not aware of her thoughts and feelings and thinks what is best for her is a ‘good’ match with Paris. Often prudent, he commands respect and propriety, but is capable to fly into a rage when either is lacking.

MERCUTIO
(20’s) Romeo’s close friend. Can be slightly older than Romeo and Benvolio but not so much that he seems foolish hanging out with them. Has a brilliant mind and volatile temper, extreme highs and lows, hotheaded, and wasting away in a community that cannot contain him. Killed by Juliet’s cousin Tybalt.

BENVOLIO/FRIAR JOHN
(20’s)
BENVOLIO – Romeo’s cousin and close friend. Should be convincing as a teenager but he’s an old soul – in fact, he’s the only youngster who can talk to the older characters. A loyal and a thoughtful presence. We never find out what’s on his mind.
FRIAR JOHN – A Franciscan friar charged by Friar Lawrence with taking the news of Juliet’s false death to Romeo in Mantua. Friar John is help up by a quarantine and the message never reaches Romeo.

PARIS/AS CAST
(20’s) He is the suitor of Juliet most preferred by Capulet. He should read early 20’s. He is aligned with Escalus, the Prince of Verona and he knows it. A young power player, handsome, certain, and intelligent – but necessarily passionate (like a Malcolm or an Octavius Caesar).

TYBALT/SECOND WATCHMAN
(20’s)
TYBALT - Juliet’s cousin. Actor must be convincing as a teenager. The ultimate progeny of the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues. Rash, arrogant, and violent. Quick to imagine offense, when none is intended. He kills Mercutio. ACTOR MUST HAVE SUPERB STAGE COMBAT SKILLS.

FEMALE:

JULIET
(20’s) Actress must be convincing as a teenage girl. Must have a backround in Shakespeare. The character may be young but this is not a starter role in Shakespeare. She is the daughter of Capulet. A beautiful girl, she begins the play as a naïve child who has thought little about love and marriage, but she grows quickly upon falling in love with Romeo. A combination of genuine vulnerability, strength of purpose, and beauty (especially in the vocal delivery. These qualities have to come through the verse).

SEEKING ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES FOR ALL ROLES. LOOKING FOR A TOTALLY DIVERSE CAST.
