A new doctor is in charge of Charenton, but can he silence the asylum’s most notorious inmate – the infamous Marquis de Sade? This battle of wills and examination of censorship won the Kesselring Prize for Best New American Play and the Obie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Playwriting. Not for the faint of heart.

ROLES:
Marquis de Sade – M 40-70. A brilliant, possibly mad writer of erotica. Passionate and petulant, he manipulates everyone. Role requires nudity.

Abbe de Coulmier – M 25-45. A cleric who reluctantly accepts the task of taming the Marquis and halting his inflammatory writings. QUILLS is his tragic tale.

Dr. Royer-Collard – M 30-60. The newly-appointed warden of the asylum, he seeks order at any cost, including torture.

Renee Pelagie – F 20-40. The unhappy wife of the Marquis who seeks to silence her husband in order to restore her sullied name.

Madeleine LeClerc – F 20-30. A cleaning woman working at Charenton alongside her blind mother. She delights in the Marquis' lurid tales.

Monsieur Prioux – M 20-40. A renowned architect in charge of remodeling the doctor's house to meet the desires of the doctor's wife.
