LOVE, LOSS & WHAT I WORE
Written by Nora Ephron & Delia Ephron • Based on the book by Ilene Beckerman
Director: Jeremy Quinn

SYNOPSIS
Love, Loss, & What I Wore is about memory as viewed through the clothing we remember best. It’s about purses and friendship, shoes and tragedy, coats and love, and robes and loss. It is, at heart, about being a woman and the bonds made between women through shared experiences. The show encapsulates these moments and uses them to explore what it means to be a mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, girlfriend, wife. It’s a story of the women’s roles and the clothes chosen to represent the changes and challenges of every woman.

CASTING BREAKDOWN
Casting note: This is a show about women—all women, from all different backgrounds, races, cultures, and classes. We would like the cast to reflect this diversity. All roles are open/available.

  • GINGY (female, 60’s+) serves as the through-line of the play. Her monologues take us all the way back to her childhood, through her teen years, marriage, and finally, being a grandmother. She is artistic and creative. She got her name because her hair used to be red. The character herself is most likely in her 80’s, but this is not explicitly stated. This actress must be very strong as Gingy’s monologues are some of the longest in the show.
  • WOMAN 2 (50+) Multiple roles.
  • WOMAN 3 (40+) Multiple roles.
  • WOMAN 4 (30+) Multiple roles.
  • WOMAN 5 (25+) Multiple roles.

Specific roles are not assigned by the script, and will be determined by casting.

CASTING BREAKDOWN
Seeking singers with a tremendous sense of comedy. All roles are open/available. 4 females between the ages of 25 – 60, including, at least, one African American female. All must have exceptional singing voices and move extremely well. An extremely keen sense of comedy is a must for all characters.

  • Female 1 (45-60) Scholarly, believably of Norwegian descent. As the “Narrator”, she is the backbone of the show, interacting with the audience and the other three women to bring the stories to life. Must be warm and welcoming, with the ability to make the audience feel she is talking directly to them individually. Moderate singing and some movement required. Featured songs include: “Che Sera Sera”, “In My Daughter’s Eyes”, “Piece of my Heart” and “Beautiful”.
  • Female 2 (25-40) Can sing jazz, soul, R&B. Dance skills a plus. She is abrasive—the “hard-hearted Hannah,” and needs to find her vulnerability. Real courage is not displayed by aggression or overdone power. She learns to temper her strength, to push back in more productive ways. Featured songs include: “I Will Survive”, “Where the Boys Are”, and “Respect.” A woman of Black / African Descent is preferred.
  • Female 3 (25-35) Can sing standard musical theater and pop. Dance skills a plus. The ingenue of the group, bouncy, energetic, a bit ditsy, but full of heart. She is innocent and naïve, searching for her own strength and belief in herself. Featured songs include: “As Long As He Needs Me”, “It Must Be Him”, and “Greatest Love of All”.
  • Female 4 (35-45) Can sing standard musical theater, jazz, and pop. Dance skills a plus. Possibly someone with a larger build or someone who has previously had a different body size; she is greatly lacking in self-confidence. Her only source of strength is her sexuality and her body, which she nonetheless detests. She finally learns to accept herself and find inner strength. Features songs include: “Whatever Lola Wants”, “Won’t You Come Home Bill Bailey”, “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”, and “I’ve Never Been to Me”.
