CHILDREN’S AUDITIONS FOR 2016-17 SEASON
Ocean State Theatre Company announces Open Children’s Auditions for its 2016-17 productions of Billy Elliot, White Christmas and Inherit the Wind. Needed are:
Billy Elliot The Musical:
Looking for two male and six-eight female actor/singer/dancers who are no taller than 62”, to play the role of Billy Elliot, Michael & the Ballet Class Girls. Children auditioning should look no older than 12 years old and be able to execute complex choreography, hold their part in multi-part harmony and follow directions. Also looking for understudies and/or possible double casting.
Billy Elliot - boys auditioning should look no older than 12 years old, be no taller than 60” and be fearless performers. Solo singing and dancing is required. Billy wears tights during part of the show.
Michael - boys auditioning should look no older than 12 years old, be no taller than 60” and be fearless performers. Solo singing and dancing is required. Michael wears a dress during part of the show.
Ballet Class Girls - children auditioning should look between 8-13 years old, be no taller than 62”, and must have some previous technical training.
Selected children will need to be available for afternoon, evening and weekend rehearsals and performances from September 6 – October 23, 2016.
Open auditions will be held on Saturday, July 9 from 12pm–3pm and Sunday, July 10 from 6:30pm-9:30pm.
White Christmas:
Looking for one very strong female actor/singer to play the role of Susan Waverly, General Waverly’s granddaughter, who lives with him at the Inn. Also looking for understudies and/or possible double casting.
Susan Waverly – girls auditioning should look appropriate to play 9-10 years old believably, be no taller than 60”, have an excellent belt voice, and be able to move well. Susan is a lovable and outgoing real kid. She is very smart, wise beyond her years, and cares deeply about her grandfather. Once bitten hard by the showbiz bug she really shines. Sings reprise of “Let Me Sing and I’m Happy.”
Selected actors will need to be available for afternoon, evening and weekend rehearsals and performances from November 14 – December 24, 2016 (plus possible one week extension).
Open auditions will be held on Saturday, July 9 from 12pm–3pm and Sunday, July 10 from 6:30pm-9:30pm.
Inherit the Wind:
Looking for one strong male and one strong female actress, who are no taller than 64”, to play the role of Howard Blair and Melinda Loomis. Children auditioning should look no older than 12-14 years old. Need very smart actors who can follow direction consistently.
Howard Blair – a 13-year-old high school student who was in Bertram Cates' class, a Hillsboro high school teacher who has taught the theory of evolution in violation of a state law banning its teaching in classrooms.
Melinda Loomis - a 12-year-old girl who believes strongly in the Bible at a time when court proceedings are brought against a teacher who has taught the theory of evolution in violation of a state law banning its teaching in classrooms.
Selected actors will need to be available for afternoon, evening and weekend rehearsals and performances from March 14 – April 16, 2017. (Plus possible added weekday student matinees.)
Open auditions will be held on Saturday, July 9 from 4–5 pm and Sunday, July 10 from 5:30pm-6:30pm.

Those auditioning should enter through the main lobby doors and bring their headshot or a recent photo and resume (if available). Children interested in being considered for both Billy Elliot: The Musical and White Christmas, should come with a short prepared song, preferably with sheet music. A cappella is also acceptable. No tape recorders or CD players. Those asked to stay may learn a short dance combination and/or be asked to do cold readings from the script. Please bring or wear appropriate shoes for dancing. Children interested in being considered for Inherit the Wind should prepare a brief memorized monologue or poem. They may also be asked to do cold readings from the script. Sign-up will begin 30 minutes prior to each posted audition time.
