SHOW DESCRIPTION
GENRE: Zany Comedy
TIME: 1934 - Cleveland, Ohio.
ALL WELCOME
Winner of 3 Tony Awards and 4 Drama Desk Awards, Lend Me A Tenor is set in
September 1934. Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world-famous singer Tito Merelli, known as Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as the star of the opera. Tito arrives late, and through a hilarious series of mishaps, he is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead - and in a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Merelli's costume and fool the audience into thinking he's Il Stupendo. Max succeeds and lives up to his idol, but Merelli regains consciousness and gets into the identical costume, ready to perform. Now two opera singers are running around in the same costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il
Stupendo. A sensation on Broadway and in London's West End, this madcap, screwball comedy is
guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter.?
MAX (Male, 20s): Assistant to Saunders - A bit of a mousy kind of guy, who is great at taking orders. Almost a “Woody Allen” type. Good at comedic double-takes, mannerisms and improv.
MAGGIE (Female, early-mid 20s): Saunders’ Daughter and Max’s girlfriend. Cute, bubbly and semi-innocent. Good at on-stage comedy.
SAUNDERS (Male, late 40s - mid-50s): Manager of the Cleveland Open Company and Maggie’s father. A rather loud, boisterous blowhard. A fellow who has a short fuse and who is never wrong. Good at over-the-top mannerisms.
TITO MERRELLI (Male, mid-late 40s): A world-famous tenor, known to his fans as Il Stupendo. An over-the-top performer who os quite in love with himself. Comedic facial expressions. Heavy Italian accent.
MARIA (Female, mid-late 40s): Tito Merrelli’s wife. An attractive but very jealous woman with a temper as explosive as Mount Vesuvius. Good at on-stage physical comedy. Heavy Italian accent.
BELLHOP (Male, 20s - early 40s): The hotel’s bellhop. An incredibly huge fan of opera and Tito Merrelli. A bit flamboyant and will do anything to meet his idols. Good at over-the-top on-stage mannerisms and silliness.
DIANA (Female, mid-30s - early 40s): A soprano in the Cleveland Opera Company. A big diva in a small city. She’ll do anything to jump the line in show business.
JULIA (Female, mid-50s - late-60s): Chairwoman of the Opera Guild. A stuffy high society erudite, with a pompous disposition. Should be able to command the stage with her
