Available Roles: (play takes place in 1942). Roles are written with a New York accent.
Arthur (Arty) Kurnitz – about 13 ½ years old. An observer, sometimes inadvertently funny, sometimes inadvertently intelligent coments. Caught between wanting to stay a child and wanting to grow up.
Jacob (Jay) Kurnitz – Almost 17, the elder brother. Intelligent, a jokester, sometimes self-serving. More sensitive and scared than he wants to let on. Wants to be a man, but is not quite mature enough. He eventually finds his inner strength..
Grandma Kurnitz – 70-odd years old. A Jewish Immigrant from Germany many years before. Strong and powerful, exudes authority and discipline. Is intimidating to everyone around her, especially her children. Runs a candy store.
Eddie Kurnitz – early 40s. Widower and father to Jay and Arty. Caught in a hard place. Uncertain and intimidated but determined to do what is best for him and his family.
Bella Kurnitz- mid-30s. Warm and congenial, but emotionally arrested and mentally flighty. Still living at home with her mother, and working in the candy shop, since no one considers her capable of living on her own. Highly intimidated by her mother.
Louie Kurnitz – 36. Least openly intimidated by his mother. Laid-back, and joking, but is rumored to be a bag-man for the mob who “cleans up messes.” Has found it necessary to look out for himself most of his life.
Gert Kurnitz – late 30s-early 40s. Has an unusual breathing/speaking pattern due to childhood discipline trauma by her mother. Lives on her own, but still falls in to her childhood breathing/speaking patterns whenever she is around her mother.
(Rehearsals will start May 22, play runs over 4th of July weekend but we will be dark on July 4)
