ABOUT THE SHOW:
By America's great comic playwright, this memory play is set in Yonkers in 1942. Bella is thirty-five years old, mentally challenged, and living at home with her mother, stern Grandma Kurnitz. As the play opens, ne'er-do-well son Eddie deposits his two young sons on the old lady's doorstep. He is financially strapped and taking to the road as a salesman. The boys are left to contend with Grandma, with Bella and her secret romance, and with Louie, her brother, a small-time hoodlum in a strange new world called Yonkers.
CAST BREAKDOWN:
Jay Kurnitz - mid-teens. The play serves as Jay's coming-of-age story. Resourceful and quick-witted. Requires great comedic timing.
Arty Kurnitz - 11-13. Jay’s younger, more introspective brother while maintaining his childish enthusiasm. Easygoing.
Eddie Kurnitz - late 30s-late 40s. Jay and Arty’s father who is forced to leave his children with Grandma Kurnitz in order to focus on repaying the substantial debts incurred due to the loss of his wife. Has a strained relationship with his mother and is very uncomfortable in her presence.
Aunt Bella Kurnitz - early-to-late 30s. The mentally challenged aunt who deeply adores Jay and Arty. She has the mind of a child, but strives for the independence of a woman her age, leading to significant conflict with the oppressive Grandma Kurnitz.
Grandma Kurnitz - 60+. An elderly woman who never fails to observe the weaknesses in those around her. Very strict due to her own volatile upbringing. Funny in the most acerbic way possible.
Uncle Louie Kurnitz - mid 30s-mid 40s. Wise-talking son of Grandma Kurnitz who she describes as the “survivor” of her household. Always seeks to entertain his nephews, but possesses a dark undercurrent that most never see.
Aunt Gert Kurnitz - mid 30s-late 40s. Much like her siblings, lived in fear of the wrath of Grandma Kurnitz and possesses a vocal tic into her adulthood due to the trauma
