JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
Character Breakdown

JOSEPH (lead, male) Eleventh son of Jacob and Jacob’s favorite. Looking for a strong actor with a confident but charming personality. Must be comfortable being shirtless on stage. Must move and sing very well. (Vocal Range: Tenor – A2 to A4)

NARRATOR (lead, female) The Narrator is our host and, through word and song, guides the audience gently through the story of Joseph and his brothers. The Narrator must be adept at both being the focal point and then “blending” into the scene. We are looking for an excellent singer that can completely invest in the storytelling aspect. (Vocal Range: Soprano with strong belt – F#3 to G5)

JACOB/POTIPHAR (supporting, male) Jacob is the father of Joseph and his 11 brothers. He clearly favors Joseph as the first son of his favorite wife, unwittingly causing the friction that exists between Joseph and his brothers. Potiphar is a rich, self- indulgent and sophisticated Egyptian capitalist who buys Joseph as a slave. The actor cast in this role needs to be a strong actor who can sing and move reasonably well. (Vocal Range: Baritone – A2 to D4)

PHARAOH (cameo, male) Pharaoh is the most powerful man in Egypt, and considered a god on earth. He is in a strange psychological place and is desperately searching for the truth in his dreams. The character is an homage to Elvis. This actor will double in the Male Ensemble (Vocal Range: Baritone – B2 to G#4)

BUTLER (cameo, male) Works for Pharaoh. Meets Joseph in jail. Will double in the Male Ensemble. (Vocal Range: Baritone)

BAKER (cameo, male) Works for Pharaoh. Meets Joseph in jail. Will double in the Male Ensemble. (Vocal Range: High Tenor)

MRS. POTIPHAR (cameo, female) Mrs. Potiphar is an indulgent woman who likes to get her own way, and thinks first and foremost about her own personal gratification. She is razor sharp, beautiful and confident. Must be a strong dancer. She will double in the Female Ensemble. (Non-Singing)

THE APACHE DANCER (cameo, female) The Apache Dancer dances with one of the brothers in “Those Canaan Days”. She is exactly what the brothers need in the height of the famine. Must be a strong dancer. (Non-Singing)

MALE ENSEMBLE (ensemble, male) Will play multiple roles throughout the show including Joseph's 11 Brothers (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin). Soloists for “One More Angel in Heaven”, “Those Canaan Days” and “Benjamin Calypso” will be selected from these men. A dance soloist for “Those Canaan Days” will also be selected from here. We would like to find a group of 11 actors who are exceptional singers that can also move well.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE (ensemble, female) Will play multiple roles throughout the show including wives to the Brothers. They sing and dance throughout the entire show. We would like to find a group of 11 women who are extraordinary singers and can move well.

CHILDREN'S CHORUS (ensemble, boys and girls) This group of children will sing and dance throughout the show. The show is being told to them by the Narrator. We are looking for children ages 8 to 13. Boys must have unchanged voices. This chorus may be double cast.

We will also be casting up to 2 Male and 2 Female Swings to cover the Ensemble roles. Performances are not guaranteed. One of these Swings will also be the production's Dance Captain. Understudies will also be cast through the Ensemble and Swings.
