JIA is a new bilingual play written by Michelle Chan, presented as a workshop performance at Dixon Place, directed by Michelle Chan & Caleb McKay.
A young woman of color enters a phase of self discovery, while unpacking the cultural effects of growing up in a seemingly normal nuclear family. It is a uniquely American story, but one that’s often left untold or unexplored. This play is bilingual because that is the way these characters think. These characters are complicated because they lack a solid cultural identity. This is not a piece about racism but more a presentation of cultural divide, and the confusion that comes along with it.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
MOTHER [female] [person of color] [chinese speaking]
A strong and protective female figure. Lacks skills to comprehend her own emotions. Wants the best for everyone around her, especially her family. Easily worried.
FATHER [male] [person of color] [chinese speaking]
Tries hard to keep a calm & collected outer demeanor, maybe a little too hard. Definitely more easy going than his partner. Hard working. Hustler. Gets things done. Seldomly talks about his personal life.
SENIOR [female] [person of color] [chinese speaking]
Rough, and tough. Keeps everything in.
MINOR [female] [person of color] [chinese speaking]
Strong. A dreamer, maybe too much of one. Analytical.
FRIEND [any gender] [any ethnicity]
Minor’s best friend. Did not grow up like Minor. Might as well be from different worlds.
Straight forward & articulate.
