NOTE ABOUT THE PRODUCTION:
This will not be a traditional production of SUPERSTAR (it will not be set in biblical times). For context, think Handmaid’s Tale; a time in the not-so-distant dystopian future, where a fundamentalist regime (that treats women as property of the state) is in the early stages of creating a totalitarian society and overthrowing the country as we know it. Jesus (and his followers) are part of a resistance movement opposing this regime. Mary, a prisoner of the regime, is freed and joins Jesus and his followers in the resistance. This cast should feel like “real people” (as opposed to polished musical theater performers). Acting is AS IMPORTANT as singing! Seeking a group of people who are totally unique with lots of personality and who make interesting, brave, and bold choices. ACTIVELY SEEKING ALL ETHNICITIES UNLESS SPECIFICALLY NOTED IN THE DESCRIPTIONS.
PRINCIPALS:
JESUS - Rock tenor; 20s- 30s. Chest voice B2-Ab4, powerful falsetto/scream up to G5. This role demands a well-rounded voice that also has a super extended upper register- virtuosity coupled with sensitive musicianship a must. Must have a mature and grounded sense about him. He is the leader of the resistance movement. This role requires an actor who can show leadership, confusion, strength, vulnerability, and optimism, often at the same time. This production will be physical and active, and all actors must be comfortable with climbing, with being on their knees (at times), and with quick costume changes. Please do not submit for consideration if you have any fear of heights or do not feel as though you will be able to handle the basic physical requirements that will be asked of you during this production.
JUDAS - Rock/tenor; 20s-30s. (E3-D4 (+); this role requires an agile and sensitive voice with access to extremely high registers across a full dynamic range. He is concerned that Jesus's teachings and the rising resistance movement will lead to deadly consequences. This production will be physical and active, and all actors must be comfortable with climbing, with being on their knees (at times), and with quick costume changes. Please do not submit for consideration if you have any fear of heights or do not feel as though you will be able to handle the basic physical requirements that will be asked of you during this production.
MARY
Belt mezzo; 20s –30s. (G#3-C5) Alternative/true rock vocal stylists. This is not a traditional musical theatre ingenue singer. Actor must effectively communicate her solo as more than just a simple love song. Must be comfortable moving. Mary is a freed prisoner of the fundamentalist regime who joins Jesus and the resistance. She finds herself falling in love with him. The role requires an actress that can show grace, stability, weakness and compassion.
HEROD
High Baritone, 30s-50s (C#3-G4). The “King”. Jesus is brough to him for judgment after first being taken to Pilate. Seeking a unique and comedic actor who can go from 0 to 100 just like that. Unpredictable, hysterical, and at times scary.
PILATE
30s-40s, Baritone A2-B4. The “Governor”. A man of his time and a leader capable of great brutality, yet also a man of a certain conscience. Foresees the events of Jesus’s death from beginning to aftermath in a dream, and finds himself being presented with that very situation. Seeking a fantastic actor with dynamic range. Constant internal struggle.
