Synopsis:

Intimate Apparel takes place in lower Manhattan in 1905. The main character is Esther, a 35-year-old African American seamstress living alone in a boarding house run by the matronly Mrs. Dickson. Esther works tirelessly creating custom-made lingerie for New York's uptown ladies and its downtown ladies of the night. Straddling these two worlds, Esther, who is plain and sensible, yearns for love. But the most romance her lonely life affords is the stories of the origins of the exotic fabrics she buys from her Orthodox Jewish supplier, Mr. Marks. These exchanges, and her dream of one day opening her own beauty salon, sustain her until she receives a letter from George, a Barbadian labourer working on the Panama Canal, who asks her to correspond with him. Esther welcomes this romantic advance, but her position is complicated by her illiteracy, and she must rely on others to write to George for her. The relationship flourishes through their letters. Eventually George comes to New York, and Esther, against the advice of Mrs. Dickson, leaves the boarding house to marry him. Marriage to George proves different than she had imagined, and it is through the way Esther navigates this relationship that the author comments on issues of race, women's sense of worth, and the struggle against compromising one's dreams.
