IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES - Prime Stage Theatre

Casting for Prime Stage’s upcoming production of In the Time of the Butterflies, a play by Caridad Svich adapted from the novel of the same name by Julia Alvarez and based on the true story of the Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic.

Auditions will be held on Sunday, Dec. 2nd, from 1-6 pm. Auditions will be cold readings of the play; we will not need to see a prepared monologue. You will be signed up by the hour and asked to stay for the whole hour.

Auditions will be held at the Prime Stage Studio, 840 Saw Mill Run Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15220.

LOOKING TO FILL THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

Female Roles:

Adele “Dede” (Older): Latina actress in her 50s or 60s. She is the guardian of memory. She lived through the experience and is tasked with keeping the memory alive. Some Spanish required.

Dede (Younger): Latina actress in her 20s or early 30s. Will play Dede from ages 23 to 35. A past version of Dede— a memory. Thoughtful and caring. A worrier. Some Spanish required

Minerva: Latina actress mid 20s to early 30s, Dede’s younger sister who earned the code-name “la Mariposa.” A revolutionary. Some Spanish required

Patria: Latina Actress in her 20s or 30s, to play ages 22-36. The oldest of the sisters and the most traditional. Some Spanish required

Maria Teresa “Mate”: Latina actress in her late teens or 20s to play ages 10-25. Idealistic but fierce. Some Spanish required

American Woman: Actress in her 20s, preferably of Latinx descent. The character is a fiction writer of Dominican descent from New York who travels to the Dominican Republic to interview Dede (older). Some Spanish required.

*Male Roles:

DJ: Latino actor to play ages 20s-30s, described as a “fluid DJ of the airwaves in past and present time. Loud, over-the-top, music lover. A lot of Spanish required.

Generalisimo Trujillo “El Jefe”/”El Chivo”: Latino actor to play ages 30s-40s, Dictator of the Dominican Republic from 1930 – 1961. Authoritarian, must be seen as the strongest person in the room at all times, forceful, manipulative. Some Spanish required.

Virgilio Morales: Latino actor to play early 20s, a revolutionary and instigator, friend of Minerva and Dede.

Rufino De La Cruz: Latino actor to play age 30-40, the Mirabal sister’s driver the day they died.

*NOTE: All male roles may be played by one actor in his 30s or 40s — or roles can be split into 2 actors — 1 in his 30s-40s and 1 in his 20s-30s.
