CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
HESTER, La Negrita (Female-Identified, African-American, 20s-30s) Mother of five, lives under a bridge; vibrant, resilient, hanging on by a thread.
CHILLI/JABBER (Male-Identified, Open Ethnicity, 20s-30s) any ethnicity; plays Chilli, Hester’s first and long lost love, and Jabber’s father; romantic, magnetic, might be a speed freak, looking for a wife; also plays Jabber, 13, Hester’s oldest son; dutiful, slow, serious.
REVEREND D / BABY (Male-Identified, Late 20s-40s, Open Ethnicity) any ethnicity; plays Reverend D., a local street preacher on the verge of having his own church; Baby’s father and desperate to keep that a secret; also plays Baby, 2, Hester’s rambunctious youngest son.
THE WELFARE LADY/ BULLY (Female-Identified, African-American, Late 20s-40s) plays Welfare, instrument of the system, married with children, living a prosperous, comfortable life; also plays Bully, 12, Hester’s oldest daughter; angry at everything.
AMIGA GRINGA/ BEAUTY (Female-Identified, Caucasian/White, Late 20s-30s) plays Amiga Gringa, Hester’s friend; fun, sly, will do anything to get a leg up; also plays Beauty, 7, Hester’s youngest daughter; pretty, likes pretty things.
DOCTOR/ TROUBLE (Male-Identified, 30s-50s, Open Ethnicity) Any ethnicity; plays the Doctor, road-side physician to the poor, instrument of the system, Trouble’s father; also plays Trouble, 10, Hester’s middle son, all appetite, takes what he wants.
