HAIRSPRAY
Twelfth Night Productions presents HAIRSPRAY, with music by Marc Shaiman, Lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Watters.
TNP’s production will boast a large diverse cast and full pit orchestra. Rehearsals begin mid June with performances August 12-21 at the WSHS Theater.

The 1950s are out and change is in the air! Hairspray, winner of 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical piled bouffant high with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs. It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire: to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. Hairspray is filled with the energy of the 1960s and is a poignant tribute to the courage to break down the walls that separate us.
HAIRSPRAY revolves around the segregation of a local TV dance show in Baltimore MD in 1962. Our goal is to involve actors of diverse backgrounds in the greater Seattle area to tell this thought-provoking and still-relevant story. All roles are open.

Audition Requirements:
Please prepare a contemporary monologue and 32 bars of a ballad or song from an upbeat musical in the style of the show. Please bring a headshot, resume, and sheet music. An accompanist will be provided.

If called back, you will be given music from the show and will be sent script sides & music. Dance auditions will be held at callbacks.

HAIRSPRAY CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Tracy Turnblad: (mezzo, belt, Caucasian 16-30) Outgoing, unstoppable, goodhearted with a vibrant, lovable, plus-sized teen who loves to dance, dreams of fame and fights to racially integrate The Corny Collins Show.
Edna Turnblad: (second tenor/baritone or female contralto, Caucasian,) Tracy's kind, plus-sized mother – typically played by a male. Edna runs a laundry business out of her home. A working class, devoted, loving housewife with dreams of her own.
Amber Von Tussle: (female soprano, Caucasian 16-30) Bratty, selfish resident princess of The Corny Collins Show, despite her lack of talent. She is willing to do anything to win the Miss Teenage Hairspray pageant.
Velma Von Tussle: (mezzo belt, Caucasian) Upscale, attractive, prejudiced snob who always wants her daughter in the spotlight. Funny, biting, manipulative.
Penny Pingleton: (female mezzo/belt, Caucasian) Tracy's slightly dorky, devoted, neurotic and perky best friend.
Motormouth Maybelle: (female alto/mezzo/belt, African American) The owner of a downtown record shop and a host on The Corny Collins Show; self-described as big, blonde and beautiful.” Seaweed and Little Inez’s mother. Powerful and inspiring, with an infectious, brassy personality.
Little Inez: (high mezzo/belt, African American,12-20) Seaweed's younger sister, who tries to audition for The Corny Collins Show but is turned away because she is black. Spunky, tough, streetwise, outgoing, older than her years.
Female Authority Figure: The Matron guarding The Big Dollhouse, the Gym Teacher, and Prudy Pingleton: Penny's overprotective and often close-minded mother. May be played by one or several actresses.
Link Larkin: (male second tenor/baritone, Caucasian, 16-30) A teenage heartthrob and one of The Corny Collins Show Council Members who falls in love with Tracy.
Seaweed J. Stubbs: (male tenor, African American) A hip dancer. His dance lessons help Tracy get chosen for the local TV teen dance show. Cool, attractive, street smart, goodhearted. Son of Motormouth Maybelle who becomes Penny’s boyfriend.
Wilbur Turnblad: (male baritone, Caucasian) Tracy’s goofy father. He encourages Tracy to follow her dreams. A working class inventor with a sweet, childlike personality. Adores his family.
Corny Collins: (male tenor) Host of the local TV teen dance show. Handsome, charming, engaging, smooth.
Male Authority Figure: Various roles including a nervous businessman; a condescending high school principal; a flamboyant fashion boutique owner; a cop; and a corrupt prison guard. May be played by one or several actors.
Mr. Pinky – (male baritone) Owner of Pinky’s Hefty Hideaway (dress shop).
The Dynamites: (Various Vocal Ranges, African American, 16-30) 3 sassy singer/dancers, inspired by the Supremes.
The Corny Collins Dancers: IQ, Shelly, Brenda, Sketch, Fender, Tammy, Lou Ann, Brad
Ensemble: to play high school students and citizens of Baltimore, all races, all types.
