Charity Readers Theatre
Presents
Grapes of Wrath
(Audition information for actors is at the end of this email.)
SHOW: John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning epic captures the horrors of the Great Depression and probes into the very nature of equality and justice in America. Steinbeck’s powerful landmark novel, prominently sited when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, is perhaps the most American of American Classics.
An impoverished family is driven from their farm by drought and economic hardship. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, they are forced to travel west, through the Dust Bowl, to the—hopefully—promised land of California. Along with thousands of other homeless, they seek jobs, dignity and a future.

Charity Readers Theatre, presented by Beijing Playhouse Drama Club, is all about acting, acting, acting. There are almost no costumes, no props, no sets, no lighting design, no sound design, no subtitles. It’s all acting. And as it is readers theatre, actors will carry scripts to refer to. Charity Readers Theatre is an artistic process where actors rehearse for only one week. And at the end of that week, we do one performance only. It’s a show in a week.
AGES: All Charity Readers Theatre shows are designed for families. This show is appropriate for ages 14 and up.

Grapes of Wrath
AUDITION DATE: Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 10 am.
REHEARSAL PROCESS: Beijing Playhouse’s main stage shows take more than two months to rehearse and perform for almost one month—a three month process. Charity Readers Theatre rehearses for only one week. And at the end of that week, we do one performance only. It’s a show in a week. While the commitment is much less, one week as opposed to three months, that will be one extremely intense week. Actors who are cast will live and breathe this show for that week.
LOCATION: Charity Readers Theatre’s auditions and rehearsals for Grapes of Wrath are at Dongsi Theatre rehearsal studio, a two minute walk from Dongsi subway station.
