NTPA Holds Open Auditions for Texas Premiere of Gavroche

North Texas Performing Arts (NTPA) is holding open auditions for the Texas premiere of Gavroche, a new musical based on Victor Hugo’s novel, Les Miserables. In this new take, author and composer Bonnie Glicher tells the story of Les Miserables through the perspective of the teens and kids in the story with scrappy street kid Gavroche and his sister Eponine at the helm.
NTPA will be the first theatre to publicly produce this show with an all-youth cast, and this will be the first time that Gavroche will be produced in Texas. Students in grades 5-12 are invited to submit their video audition by Thursday, September 15 to be considered for a role in the productions.
The show features a pop, contemporary score and a fresh take on a familiar story. While Gavroche’s backstory is cut from the musical adaptation of Les Mis, Hugo’s book explores his history as the son of the Monsieur and Madame Thenardier, and his family life as one of 5 siblings being raised by the wicked innkeepers.
The production will be led by co-directors Mike Mazur and Austin Hines, with Music Direction by George Variames and Choreography by Riley Madlock.
“Austin is a spectacular director and a lot of fun to work with and I know that together we’ll be able to provide great experience for those that join us on this journey,” says Mazur. “We’ve done this “fan favorite” title dozens of times, and the chance to tell this story not only from a new perspective, but from the viewpoint of the teens in the show is really inspiring for our production team. With an all-youth cast, it provides our students with a chance to really dive into character development to understand the story of these characters from a relatable point of view, and I’m excited for audiences to see that authenticity come to life on stage.”
Gavroche will rehearse on Monday evenings at NTPA’s Willow Bend Center of the Arts in Plano, TX with performances set for November 17-20 at The Courtyard Theatre in historic downtown Plano.
