FRENCHMAN - The Tank

Seeking Non-Equity actors for roles in new play Frenchman by LeRoi Richardson.

Inspired by Amiri Baraka’s Dutchman, Frenchman picks up decades after the mysterious death of Clay Williams aboard a New York City Train, his son Clay Williams Jr. unknowingly finds himself In a gender neutral Metro North bathroom in the middle of Harlem, with his father’s murderer. Living in a Du Bois paradox, Clay finds himself on a tightrope act. Will Clay fall victim to Lula’s age old tactics or open the door for a new consciousness?

This workshop production will take place at the The Tank in the Garment District, Manhattan. The play itself is still being revised and we are hoping to shape the show with the company through the process. VIDEO SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: Please submit your headshot and resume, slate including your name, pronouns (optional), and location, a 1 to 2-minute dramatic contemporary monologue. The preferred method for submitting videos is to share as Google Drive files, or links to Youtube, or Vimeo. Please ensure the videos are public or unlisted, and do not need a password.

In-person callbacks will take place Friday, October 6th from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Rehearsal will be every Tuesday and Friday evening, starting October 10th 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM.

A weekend rehearsal will be picked up on the week of November 5th, as we move closer to the show.

Required Dates:

Load-In: November 17th

Dress Rehearsal: November, 18th

Performances: November 19th, 20th

Roles:

Lula Late 20s-Early 30’s; White or White passing , a seductress, works as a “cultural anthropologist”, as a product of nepotism. She is often flippant, territorial, and a master manipulator.

Clay Williams Jr. Late 20s-early 30s; Black/or African-American, An opportunistic Wall Street analyst, often disassociates from his blackness for the sake of upward mobility, a black bourgeois, confident, well collected and well put together individual.

Maintenance Woman (Will also play Deja and Police Officer 2) 20’s-30’s, Black, Lula’s assistant, A crybaby, an aide to Lula's treachery.

Deja (Will also play Maintenance woman and Police Officer 2): 20’s -30’s Black, Brazen, judgmental, easily annoyed, wholeheartedly afrocentric almost to the point of black bigotry, an old friend of Clay's.

Saxman (Will also play Police Officer 1): 50's - 60's, Non-white, A widow and wanderer. Lives in a constant state of despair. A soulful Sax player. an early victim of New York’s ongoing Displacement and Gentrification epidemic. Ability to play sax, a plus but not a requirement.

Police Officer 1 (Will also play Deja/Maintenance Women): 20's-30's, black, a sorry excuse for law enforcement.

Police Officer 2 (Will also play Saxman): 50's-60's, Non-White, An even sorrier excuse for law enforcement.

Payment

Actors will receive a $300 stipend at the end of production. Submissions will close October 4th at 6 PM
