AUDITIONS FOR FOOL FOR LOVE By Sam Shepard
Monday & Tuesday
July 16 & 17, 2018 at 7 PM
In a run-down motel room on the edge of the Mojave Desert, Eddie comes to claim May, the young woman with whom he has had an tempetuous on-again, off-again relationship for the past 15 years, and who has sworn him off due to his frequent absences and love affairs. As the recriminations pour out, sometimes violently, the desperate nature of their relationship becomes apparent: they cannot get along with, or without, one another, yet neither can subdue their burning passion. Two other characters highlight their situation: a young man who is May’s date for the evening, and a ghostly old man who sits in a rocking chair at the side of the stage. The confrontation among them reveals themes of identity, truth, and destiny.
**Please be aware that this play contains both mature themes and language. Limited stage fighting.
ABOUT THE AUDITION: Please wear comfortable clothing, and be prepared to perform cold read-ings from the script. No monologue preparation necessary. Resumes and/or headshots are optional.
Rehearsals will begin the week of July 30 and will be held Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, with additional rehearsals closer to performances.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN (3M, 1W)
(please note that character ages are guides only and reflect relative ages of the characters)
EDDIE (30 – 40): Rodeo performer. Outward facade of calm and quiet strength which masks a deep possessiveness toward May and jealousy toward any other possible man in her life. Laconic, rough-spoken and brusque, at times brutish and bully-ing, with an air of menace; a slow-burning anger which can explode viscerally. Sincere in his dream of taking care of and l
iving a life with May, but in denial as to what that will entail. Actor playing Eddie should be willing to learn to use a lariat.
MAY (late 20s – late 30s): Volatile, given to emotional high and lows and co-dependent behavior, which have surely been enabled by Eddie in the past. Both May and Eddie have passive-aggressive natures, but while Eddie’s is more controlled, May displays hers openly. May projects a sense of resolve about quitting Eddie but inwardly is unsure what she wants and is
desperate, afraid that she will end up with Eddie (and that he will repeat The Old Man’s behavior), but just as afraid that he will leave her.
THE OLD MAN (late 50s – 60s). Father of both Eddie and May, with different women, living at times with Eddie’s mother and then with May’s, concealing his double-life from both. Angry, cruel, and aggrieved, he is the sort who believes nothing is his fault. Refuses to accept that his actions ultimately produced the dysfunction at the heart of Eddie and May’s relationship, and caused Eddie’s mother to take her own life. Exists in the minds of Eddie and May, although they occasionally speak to him and acknowledge his presence.
MARTIN (late 20s – late 30s): Groundskeeper at the nearby high school. Met May at an unspecified earlier time and has a date to take her to the movies on the very night Eddie shows up. Simple, unassuming, good-natured, and no match for Eddie.
Show Dates: September 21, 22 & 23, 2018
