The Theatre Company of Saugus will present Evil Dead the Musical in October 2024.
Auditions are scheduled for July 8, 9, and 11; with callbacks on July 13.
The Story: Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods, and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them into demons. It's all up to Ash (a housewares employee turned demon-killing hero) and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered. Demons tell bad jokes ... and all to music. The songs in the show are completely off the wall, with titles like All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons and What the F**k was That? have had audience rolling in their seats, and screaming for more and more blood.
You don't need to be a fan of Evil Dead to love this show. You don't need to be a fan of horror to love this show. You don't even need to be a fan of musicals to love this show. This is a pure comedy start to finish. It has fun with the horror genre, and in doing so appeals to a wider audience than you could ever imagine.
The director is Jason Hair-Wynn. The music director is Shane Stetcher, with choreography by Jason Hair-Wynn and Jill Tokac, and fight choreography by Amanda O'Donnel. The stage manager is Ally Lewis.
Performances of Evil Dead are on October 11-12-13 and 18-19-20, 2024. (If there is enough audience demand we might extend it to October 25 & 27.)
Rehearsals are planned for Sunday afternoons 1-5 PM, and on Mondays and Wednesdays 7-10 PM, with the possibility of adding more based on actor availability. Please be prepared to tell us about all your rehearsal schedule conflicts.
For the audition, please prepare a song from the show for a character you are most interested in, or sing a song in the style of the show. All songs, sheet music, and sides are linked below.

Video submissions in lieu of a live audition will be accepted up until July 8. Please only submit if you are able to attend the callbacks in-person. Send to TCSaugus@gmail.com.
Callbacks will be on Saturday 13 July, starting at 1:00 PM. (Plan for a long afternoon.) Callbacks will consist of singing, acting, movement, and stage combat. You will be learning a short combination from The Necronomicon. This dance is not very complicated, and you do not have to be a strong dancer to be in our show. The main focus is that you can slay and commit to this hilarious choreography and show the character as a deadite, as well as retain choreography quickly.
Performances, auditions, and most rehearsals of Evil Dead will be at the Theatre Company of Saugus home at the American Legion Post 210 / 44 Taylor Street / Saugus, Massachusetts 01906. See our Directions page. The upstairs performance space is not wheelchair accessible. Most rehearsals will be located there, with some sessions possibly located in nearby Malden, Massachusetts.
Role Descriptions
Note that the genders below are how the characters are presented. Ages are varying. Adults over the age of 18-45. All roles are open to all.
Ash (Male- Tenor/Baritone): The hero and iconic character of the musical. This devoted S-Mart housewares employee evolves over the course of the show from a cowardly college student to a wisecracking deadite slayer with his detachable hand chainsaw and 12 gauge broomstick.
Linda (Female- Mezzo-Soprano): The girl next door. Linda is sweet, thoughtful, and completely devoted to Ash, until she turns evil and tries to kill him. She laughs an annoyingly inordinate amount of time after transforming.
Cheryl (Female - Mezzo-Soprano): Ash's sister and the odd woman out in the group. Looking to spend a week relaxing, she is the recipient of Scotty's jokes and torment. The only one to sense the evil surrounding the cabin, she is the first to be possessed, turning her into an aggressive, foul-mouthed demon that speaks in very bad puns. Spends the majority of the show locked in the cellar.
Scotty (Male - Tenor/Baritone): Good-looking, cocky, a prankster and Ash's best friend. Thinks himself the brave one until he's forced to kill, then his panic leads him to flee. He returns to warn Ash about the woods and attempts to help his friend even as he is knocking on death's door.
Shelly (Female - Mezzo-Soprano): Beautiful, easy, and not too smart. She is Scotty's latest fling and looking to party. Just because she becomes an evil demon doesn't mean she can't look good doing it
Annie (Female - Mezzo-Soprano): Quite the overbearing explorer who finds missing pages to the Necronomicon and wants to reunite with her father to continue their research. Very bossy and drawn to Ash. Must be comfortable in a tear away semi-revealing costume.
Ed (Male - Tenor/Baritone): Annie's coworker, boyfriend, and doormat. He travels with her to the cabin to proceed with their research of the book of the dead. After turning evil, his confidence may lack but this Bit Part Demon is ready to sing!
Jake (Male - Tenor/Baritone): Stereotypical Southerner and reliable enough to help Annie and Ed find the path to the cabin, but too stupid and stubborn to listen to reason that will keep him alive.
Fake Shemp (Any Gender - Tenor/Alto): This role is basically all of the small roles in the show: Knowby, Airport Announcer, the Severed Hand, Linda's Headless Body, the Evil Force, etc.
SMALL ROLES THAT THE CAST ABOVE FILL
Evil Trees: These are the true comedians of the show. A nasty group of trees out to get the campers and will stop at nothing, be prepared to be gross! Usually played by Jake, Ed & Fake Shemp.
Moose (Any Gender-Tenor/Alto): A possessed, singing Candarian Demon moose head! That alone makes it awesome, except once moose get going, they never stop! Usually played by Ed or Fake Shemp.
Please note that small roles may be played by other characters in the show as well based on auditions and ability for character in the show. We may also cast ensemble members to fill small roles and play a deadite as well, this may mean that the Fake Shemp would share responsibilities and roles.
