East Lynne Theater Company auditions for its summer/fall season 2015
East Lynne Theater Company (ELTC) will have two audition days of open calls for Equity actors. On Thursday, March 5 from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM the call will be at the Actors’ Equity Audition Center, 165 West 46th St., NYC. Sign-up for auditions begins at 8:30 AM, and continues through 5:00 PM. Lunch break is from 1:00-2:00 PM. On Saturday, March 14 from noon-4:00 PM, the call will be at The First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes St., Cape May, NJ, where the company is in residence. Non-union actors will be seen at all auditions, as long as no Equity actors are kept waiting.
The company operates under an Equity SPT 3 Contract with rehearsals beginning on Monday two weeks before the opening-performance week, and aWednesday through Saturday night performance schedule, with two exceptions, which are noted below. All of the rehearsals will be in Cape May.
Artistic Director, Gayle Stahlhuth will be at the auditions and is directing all three shows. Actors are asked to audition with a brief monologue, preferably humorous, for the audition in NYC. In Cape May, actors have the choice of auditioning with either a humorous monologue, or reading from a side from “Lincoln,” “Huckleberry Finn,” or “Strictly Dishonorable.” Sides will be available at this audition, and a reader will be provided for those auditioning with sides.
Since 2015 is the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's assassination, the one-person show “Mr. Lincoln” by Herbert Mitgang, has been selected to open the season. On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, the President and Mrs. Lincoln, while watching “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre, John Wilkes Booth entered the President’s box. Lincoln’s life flashes before him, from his early days as a lawyer to President of the United States, as Booth aims his pistol and fires. This play runs from June 17-July 25. There is no show on Saturday, July 4, and an added performance on Sunday, July 5. MR. LINCOLN: 1 male age range 45-60, with some resemblance to President Abraham Lincoln towards the end of his life. At this time, the role is cast, but actors may audition in case there is a need for a replacement.
Next is “Huckleberry Finn,” a world premiere based on the Mark Twain classic, adapted by James Rana. The actors portraying Huck and Jim portray only these 2 characters, and currently these roles are cast, although actors may audition for these roles in case there is a need for replacements. The other four actors play multiple roles, and ELTC is seeking those with movement and musical abilities, including singing, playing a guitar, banjo, or violin. At the open call, only reading from the sides or monologues are required. Roles: HUCK: a young man running away from an abusive father, age range 14-16; JIM: African-American, a run-away slave, age range 25-25; MAN 1: age range 35-50 to portray Judge Thatcher, Duke, and other roles; WOMAN 1: age range 30-45 to portray Widow Douglas, Mrs. Loftus, and other roles; MAN 2: age range 35-50 to portray Pap Finn, King, and other roles; and WOMAN 2: age range 30-40 to portray Mrs. Watson, and other roles.
In the fall, it's Preston Sturges's 1929 comedy, “Strictly Dishonorable.” An innocent Southern belle and her fiancé from West Orange, NJ step into a Manhattan speakeasy where they encounter its gracious manager and his employees, a clever judge, and a worldly Italian opera star. It runs from Sept. 23-Oct. 17. There is no show on Wednesday, October 7, and a show on Sunday, October 11. Seeking: ISABELLE PARRY: a woman from the South, looking for adventure, engaged to Henry Greene when the play begins, age range 20-30; HENRY GREEN: looking for a wife he thinks he can dominate, age range 20-30; COUNT DI RUVO: well-known opera singer who loves the ladies, age range 30-40; JUDGE DEMPSEY: kind man who lives above the speakeasy, age range 45-60; TOMASO ANTIOVI: born in Italy, now owns the speakeasy in NYC where the play takes place, enjoys making his guests feel at home, age range 40-60; GIOVANNI: Italian, works for Tomaso, age range 30-40; MARIO: Italian, works for Tomaso, age range 30-40; and PATROLMAN MULLIGAN: Irish, age range 20-50.
