DEAD POETS’ SORORITY - Girard Park

Looking for Philly teen actors ages 14-18 for all roles in the new musical Dead Poets' Sorority written and directed by me, Caroline Vollmer. This will be a workshop-style, low-budget production with a cast and crew made up entirely of young artists and creatives.

Here's the story: “For most of our lives, we're told that excelling at school will lead to a bright, successful future. All we have to do is study and work hard. That's the way it works at Welton Academy—otherwise known as Hellton,— a boarding school for only the brightest girls in the country to prepare them to be successful women…in misogynistic 1950s standards.

Tess Anderson, who comes from a long line of successful Welton alums, is dysfunctionally shy and tends to fall into the background. Her roommate, Annelise Perry, although exceedingly brilliant and popular, is very much under the thumb of her overbearing and overachieving parents, though she has dreams that go beyond medical school. The two, along with their other friends, meet Professor Jane Keating, a former hellraiser -turned-English-teacher at Welton and founder of the “Dead Poets’ Society.” Through poetry, she challenges her class to figure out who they are, not what Welton wants them to be.

This musical takes the famous movie and spins it on its head by playing with the gender roles and concepts of the original work by challenging norms in an exploration of passion, art, love, and individuality, with hopes to inspire the audience to live fully, seize the day, and make their mark while they can.”

*A NOTE ON THE PROCESS
Due to the fact that this is a new show being put together entirely by a broke teenager, this will be a very lax and, though efficient, occasionally chaotic process. Rehearsals will not always be held in the same location (as of now they are in my basement until I secure a studio), and the venue of the actual performance is still up in the air. We ask that you please be patient and flexible throughout rehearsals, and are willing to possibly learn music independently (tracks will be recorded) so that way rehearsals can be dedicated to actually piecing the show together. We are all doing this show for the first time together, so we ask for cooperation throughout the process. Thank you!
