Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra announces auditions for 2015-16 season to take place

May 2015 at Severance Hall

The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra has announced auditions for the 2015-16 season. Auditions will be held at Severance Hall during the month of May, with late afternoon, evening, and weekend audition times available. Middle- and high-school student instrumentalists, who are studying privately and involved in their school music program, are invited to audition. Auditions will be heard for the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, flute, piccolo, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, tuba, percussion, and keyboard instruments (alternate position). Audition applications must be received by Friday, March 13, 2015 at 5:00 pm. The application fee is $25. Those interested should contact Youth Orchestra Manager Lauren Generette at

During the 2015-16 season the Youth Orchestra will celebrate its 30th season and give three performances at Severance Hall as well as concerts in the greater Cleveland community with Music Director Brett Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell is currently serving his second season as Assistant Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra and as well as music director of the Youth Orchestra.

Members of The Cleveland Orchestra serving as coaches to the Youth Orchestra and leading weekly sectional rehearsals include: William Preucil, Yoko Moore, and Emilio Llinas (violin), Lynne Ramsey, Stanley Konopka, and Mark Jackobs (viola), Richard Weiss and David Alan Harrell (cello), Mark Atherton (bass), Marisela Sager (flute/woodwinds), Frank Rosenwein and Jeffrey Rathbun (oboe/woodwinds), Robert Woolfrey (clarinet/woodwinds), Jonathan Sherwin (bassoon/woodwinds), Richard Stout (brass), Hans Clebsch (horn/brass), Lyle Steelman (trumpet), and Richard Weiner (retired) (timpani/percussion).

The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, now in its twenty-ninth season, is a 100-member, full symphony orchestra of young musicians from 40 communities in 12 counties of Ohio and Pennsylvania. The ensemble was one of five youth orchestras chosen to participate in the National Youth Orchestra Festival at Michigan’s Interlochen Center for the Arts in June 1998. In March 2001, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra made its debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall, as part of the Carnegie Hall Family Concert Series, and at Penn State University’s Eisenhower Auditorium. In June 2009, the Youth Orchestra traveled on a six-day, four-concert tour to Boston, Massachusetts and its surrounding communities. In June 2012, the Youth Orchestra made their first international appearances with a tour that included concerts in Prague, Vienna, and Salzburg. In June of 2015, the Youth Orchestra will embark on its second international tour to China. The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra is supported by a generous grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and by many other donors. Endowment support is provided by The George Gund Foundation, the Estate of Jules and Ruth Vinney, and Christine Gitlin Miles.
